Perched at South America's northwest corner with coasts on two oceans, Colombia grows some of the world's most prized coffee and is one of the most biodiverse nations on the planet.
It's one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth and home to more bird species than any other nation.
It's the only South American country with coastlines on two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic.
The Amazon rainforest covers a large part of its south.
Author Gabriel García Márquez, a Nobel laureate and pioneer of magical realism, was Colombian.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands with yellow on top taking up half the flag, then blue and red each a quarter. No Colombian law gives the colours a meaning; by popular tradition yellow stands for the riches of the land, blue for the two oceans the country borders, and red for the struggle for independence.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Colombia receives a very large volume of family money from abroad, though most of it originates in the United States and Spain, so Australia is a small side route on a well-worn national flow. An everyday transfer converts into a six-figure peso amount, which is normal for this unit rather than a sign of a keying error.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Colombia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Bre-B addresses a payment by a key the recipient registers. The Banco de la República operates the country's interoperable immediate payment system, in operation since the second half of 2025. A user registers a key of one of five kinds to be paid on it: their national identification number, a mobile number, an email address, a randomly generated alphanumeric string, or a merchant code. Money addressed that way reaches the recipient in seconds and crosses between institutions.
The Bank's role in payments is wider than operating that one system. On its own account it provides securities deposit and settlement, opens and manages deposit accounts, runs electronic funds transfer and interbank clearing, and enables the interoperability of immediate payment orders and transfers. It also regulates the high-value payment systems and that interoperability, and supplies intraday liquidity to authorised financial institutions.
One thing the recipient cannot offer is an international account number. Colombia does not appear in the ISO 13616 registry, so no Colombian IBAN exists to be quoted. The key and the account number behind it are domestic identifiers, defined by the Colombian system that issues them.
How much Colombian peso will I receive in Colombia?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Colombia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Colombia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
