About the AUD/COP rate

The AUD/COP rate is how many COP one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/COP rate history.

The other directions of this rate: the reverse rate, COP → AUD, is on the receiving Colombian peso view, and sending Australian dollars to Colombia is covered on the AUD → COP transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

Why the Colombian peso trades abroad as a contract

Colombian law defines its foreign exchange market by compulsion. Article 36 of the Banco de la República's Resolución Externa 1 of 2018 provides that the exchange market is constituted by the totality of the foreign currency that must obligatorily be channelled through the intermediaries authorised for that purpose, or through the compensation mechanism the resolution sets out. The word doing the work is "obligatorily", and the list of those intermediaries is closed, running from banking establishments and financial corporations through stockbroking companies to a named set of public entities, each of which has to be registered with the central bank.

A currency that has to come home to be exchanged is awkward to settle abroad. The Bank for International Settlements describes the general case plainly: non-deliverable forwards are contracts for the difference between an agreed exchange rate and the actual spot rate at maturity, settled with a single payment, and they allow hedging and speculation in a currency without providing or requiring funding in it. Such markets emerge, in its account, from a starting point where restrictions on foreign participation in the domestic market and on offshore deliverability have fostered them.

The central bank uses the same instrument on itself. Among the four intervention operations its own resolution authorises is the sale of foreign currency through forward contracts of financial settlement at market rates, by auction. A financially settled forward is a non-deliverable one, so Colombia's monetary authority intervenes in its own currency without delivering it.

None of which makes the peso small. On the Banco de la República's report of the April 2025 triennial survey, average daily foreign exchange turnover was US$7,293 million, up 48 per cent on three years earlier, with forwards growing 64.2 per cent by volume, and the peso rose from the 34th to the 30th most traded currency in the world.

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
