A bold white equal-armed cross on a red square, one of only two square national flags in the world. The cross has been carried on Swiss field ensigns since the 14th century, but federal law has defined the square flag only since 2017, and that law fixes the cross's proportions and the red in seven colour systems while giving none of it a meaning. Federal law separately prescribes a rectangular Swiss flag for use at sea.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
The franc is a classic safe-haven currency: in risk-off markets CHF tends to strengthen, which can move this corridor sharply even when nothing changes between Australia and Switzerland. Switzerland is also one of the few places where a large inbound transfer routinely triggers source-of-funds questions from the receiving bank, so the delay on this corridor tends to sit at the destination rather than in transit.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Swiss banks take part in the SEPA credit transfer schemes, with SIX Interbank Clearing acting as the country's national adherence support organisation for them. SEPA carries euro, so a euro payment can reach a Swiss IBAN over those rails. A payment denominated in Swiss francs takes another route, arriving through correspondent banking into the Swiss Interbank Clearing system, which SIX operates on behalf of the Swiss National Bank and which carries retail payments alongside large-value ones. The identifier throughout is the IBAN, and the standards around it are moving: the Swiss Payment Standards implementation guidelines in force since 21 November 2025 introduce structured addresses, which are becoming mandatory in cross-border payments, alongside an extended character set.
Switzerland's instant capability was built receive-first. SIX records that every active participant in Swiss customer payment transactions is expected to be able to process incoming instant customer payments by the end of 2026, while sending them stays voluntary, with end-to-end execution inside ten seconds. Reaching that capability from another currency area remains a project: the Swiss National Bank and the European Central Bank opened an exploration phase on 29 September 2025 into linking the Swiss instant service with the Eurosystem's instant settlement platform, and it runs through 2026.

How much Swiss franc will I receive in Switzerland?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Switzerland. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
