A tiny Central American nation where English is the official language and the reef never quits. Belize trades crowds for jungle, Maya ruins and some of the clearest water in the Caribbean.
It's home to the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world after Australia's.
The Great Blue Hole, a giant underwater sinkhole, is one of the planet's most famous dive sites.
It's the only country in Central America where English is the official language.
Ancient Maya cities like Caracol once held more people than any city in modern Belize.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A royal blue field with a red border along the top and bottom edges and a white circle at the centre bearing the coat of arms - two Belizeans, one Mestizo and one Afro-Belizean, supporting a shield of timber-industry tools above a ship in full sail, with a mahogany tree rising behind and the motto 'Sub Umbra Floreo' ('Under the shade I flourish') on a scroll below. The National Symbols Act, 2025 prescribes the flag in statute: proportions of 3:5, royal blue PMS 2738 C, red PMS 485 C, and the two red borders taking one-fifth of the width between them. It assigns the colours no meaning. The one symbol it explains is the wreath of fifty leaves, for 1950, when Belizeans began the struggle for independence. The reading that blue stands for the People's United Party and red for the United Democratic Party is conventional rather than official; the blue flag was the PUP's before independence, and the red borders came out of a bi-partisan committee's public design competition.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Belize is the only country in Central America with English as its official language, and its ties run north into the Caribbean as much as south into the isthmus. Its dollar was fixed to the US dollar in the 1970s and has not been adjusted since, so the Australian dollar supplies all of the movement.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Belize determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The one-way control, and what the counter will ask you for
Belize's exchange control points outward. In the operating conditions it sets for money transfer service providers, the Central Bank of Belize states that there are no limits on transfers of foreign exchange into Belize from legitimate sources, and in the same list caps outbound international transactions without the Bank's approval. For somebody expecting money the useful half is the first: the amount is not the thing that will hold it up.
What will shape the experience is a rule aimed squarely at the payout counter. The Bank's compliance requirements for transfer providers state that international settlements must be paid directly into a domestic local currency account, and that agents and sub-agents are not authorised to deal in foreign currency with customers or third parties. The guidelines carry a table of inbound transaction codes, and require weekly reporting of the sender's name and address, the recipient, the country of origin, the date and the amount.
The identification requirements are specific, and they exclude some documents outright. A provider must obtain identification from an official Government of Belize source for all money transfers; it must carry a unique identifier number and a photograph and must be valid. The accepted forms are a passport, a social security card, a residency card accompanied by a passport or social security card, and a driver's licence accompanied by the same. Only original documents are accepted, and political party membership cards, school identity cards and expired documents are not.
The rails themselves stop at the coastline, which the Bank says outright: asked whether the automated payment and securities settlement system can be used to send money abroad, it answers that the system is domestic, applicable only for money transfer within Belize. The Bank is both its operator and its regulator, and an instant payment system contracted in April 2026 entered an eighteen-month implementation phase.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Belize can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Belize. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
