A largely dry, sparsely populated country that turned diamonds into stability and left huge tracts of land to the wildlife. Botswana is where the Kalahari meets one of Africa's great wetlands.
The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland deltas, flooding the desert every year.
It has one of the largest elephant populations of any country on Earth.
Much of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert.
The Makgadikgadi is one of the largest salt-pan complexes in the world.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Five horizontal stripes - Botswana blue, white, black, white, Botswana blue - with the black band four times the width of each white one. The emblems law that defines the flag fixes only the colours and the widths and assigns no meaning at all, and the constitution does not mention the flag. Government accounts read the blue as sky and water and the white-black-white bands as racial harmony and the country's plural make-up, which is what the designer said of his own drawing. The zebra reading is popular but unassigned: the state's own account has the zebra chosen to match the flag, not the flag drawn from the zebra.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The pula takes its name from the Setswana word for rain, and its subunit, the thebe, from the word for shield. Botswana manages the pula against a basket that includes the South African rand rather than letting it float freely, so part of what moves this corridor originates next door.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Botswana determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
No permission needed at the border, and sixty minutes once it lands
Botswana removed the last of its exchange controls a quarter of a century ago. The Bank of Botswana's own record of its milestones states that all remaining forms of foreign exchange control were abolished in February 1999, having acceded to the International Monetary Fund's Article VIII obligations in November 1995. An arriving payment therefore needs no approval, no surrender and no permission to be kept, which is not the position across much of the region.
What has changed recently is the speed expected at the other end. In a press release of 31 December 2025 the Bank added a fourth weekday settlement window, so clearing and settlement now run at 0900, 1200, 1500 and 1700, and required that from 1 February 2026 all commercial banks credit beneficiaries' accounts immediately upon completion of each cycle and no later than sixty minutes after receiving cleared funds or settlement confirmation.
One option has closed entirely. The Bank and the Bankers Association of Botswana gave public notice on 25 September 2023 that the automated clearing house would stop accepting cheques from 1 January 2024, and that from the end of December 2023 no bank in Botswana would accept a cheque for deposit or encashment. The notice directed the public to cards, electronic funds transfer, internet banking and mobile money, in addition to cash.
How much Botswana pula will I receive in Botswana?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Botswana can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Botswana. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
