A mountainous Balkan country where Ottoman bazaars and Austro-Hungarian facades sit side by side in Sarajevo. Bosnia and Herzegovina packs a lot of history into steep river valleys.
Sarajevo was where the assassination that sparked World War I took place in 1914.
It hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in a socialist country.
The rebuilt Stari Most bridge in Mostar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a famous diving spot.
Sarajevo was one of the first European cities to have a synagogue, mosque, Catholic and Orthodox church within the same neighbourhood.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with a yellow triangle right of centre and a line of white five-pointed stars running parallel to the triangle's left side from the top edge of the flag to the bottom, so the stars at each end are cut by the edge. The design was imposed by the High Representative in February 1998 after the Parliamentary Assembly failed to agree one, and the Law on the Flag assigns no meaning to any element. The readings in circulation come from that office on the day: the triangle for the three constituent peoples, the yellow for the sun, and the blue and the stars together for Europe. The blue and yellow are those of the Council of Europe flag.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The convertible mark is run through a currency board that fixes it to the euro, an arrangement inherited from its original peg to the Deutsche Mark. That makes it one of the most rigidly anchored currencies in Europe.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Bosnia and Herzegovina determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
One set of rails in a country of two of everything
In a country that divides most of its competences, the payment system is not divided. The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina says it established the systems through which interbank payments in marks are carried out, and it operates both of them. One settles amounts above ten thousand convertible marks in real time, from eight in the morning to four in the afternoon on working days. The other nets smaller amounts in four clearing cycles a day. The infrastructure was ready to take payments from commercial banks on 5 January 2001, and the clearing half was rebuilt in 2019 on the messaging standards used across Europe.
Bank supervision stayed divided. The Bank's own account of itself is that it co-ordinates the activities of the entity banking agencies, and those agencies are what licenses and supervises a bank. Foreign exchange law is doubled in the same fashion. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska each have their own law, and the Federation's lets a resident individual hold foreign currency at a bank and draw on it freely. That is the provision deciding whether money arriving in another currency has to be changed on the way in.
The Bank is unusually direct about how money from abroad actually reaches people. On its own page about money transfers it says most citizens receive remittances in cash, through informal channels, and recommends the banking route instead. Taking that route means holding an account at a commercial bank and getting the foreign payment instructions from it: a sixteen-digit account number, carried since January 2007 inside an international form twenty characters long, the bank's SWIFT code, and the details identifying the person being paid. There is no European shortcut behind it. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the Single Euro Payments Area, and in February 2024 the Bank was still describing accession as a matter of meeting the conditions and transposing the legislation.
How much Bosnian convertible mark will I receive in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
