About the AUD/BAM rate

The AUD/BAM rate is how many BAM one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/BAM rate history.

What the convertible mark's founding law forbids

The convertible mark is issued under a currency board, and the board exists because a peace settlement put it there. The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina records that it was created by a law the country's Parliament adopted on 20 June 1997, that it began operating on 11 August 1997, and that its goals and tasks are defined by that law and in accordance with the General Peace Agreement in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It holds the mark at a fixed 0.51129 euro, equivalently 1.95583 marks to the euro, with full cover in freely convertible foreign exchange.

What a currency board obliges is arithmetic; what it forbids is the interesting part, and the Bank states all four prohibitions itself. Foreign reserves must equal at least the whole of the currency in circulation and its monetary liabilities must never exceed its foreign exchange assets, so it cannot create money without cover. It cannot use the exchange rate as an instrument against an economic shock. It cannot lend to the government. And it cannot act as a lender of last resort - the settlement that ended a war also removed, permanently, the central bank's power to rescue a bank.

The consequence runs through the whole money supply. Because monetary liabilities can never exceed foreign exchange assets, marks can only enter circulation when somebody sells convertible foreign currency to the Bank, so the domestic money stock mirrors the country's net foreign currency inflow and no domestic decision can override that.

For Australia this is a diaspora corridor of a specific vintage. The 2021 Census counted 26,171 people living in Australia who were born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a median age of 54, and 64.2 per cent of them arrived between 1991 and 2000.

This page shows the current mid-market AUD→BAM rate with a converter and a 90-day chart. The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint, not a rate you can transact at.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
