A country on the Caspian Sea where natural gas seeps up and burns from the ground, earning it the nickname 'Land of Fire'. Azerbaijan straddles the line between Europe and Asia.
It's nicknamed the 'Land of Fire' for the natural flames that burn from its gas-rich ground.
It borders the Caspian Sea, the largest inland body of water on Earth.
Its capital Baku sits about 28 metres below sea level, making it one of the world's lowest-lying capital cities.
Roughly half the country's land is mountainous, dominated by the Greater and Lesser Caucasus ranges.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of blue, red and green with a white crescent and eight-pointed star centred on the red band. The presidency gives the blue as the Turkic origin of the Azerbaijani people, the red as the desire to build a modern society and develop democracy, and the green as belonging to Islamic civilisation. No Azerbaijani state text assigns a meaning to the crescent or to the star's eight points.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Azerbaijan manages the manat closely against the US dollar and has held it at one level since April 2017, after the 2015 devaluation. Oil revenue is what underwrites that stability, so the pair is quieter than most in the region.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Azerbaijan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Every layer of the Azerbaijani payment system was built by the Central Bank, and the Bank publishes the sequence itself. Real-time gross settlement arrived on 16 February 2001, built on SWIFT, the interbank messaging cooperative, under a World Bank institution-building project, with a reserve centre. A clearing and settlement system for low-value payments followed in 2002, a centralised system for mass payments on 11 July 2008, and a government payment portal in 2012 to use its capacity for taxes, duties, rents and utilities.
The card layer is the part that would usually be private. The Interbank Card Center was commissioned on 1 April 2016 to handle transactions on cards issued by resident banks, and it too is the Bank's. The instant layer came last: an Instant Payment System created by the Central Bank and in real operation since 1 October 2020, running continuously and settling between individuals, businesses and state authorities within seconds. It was built under a state programme on the expansion of digital payments that a presidential decree of 26 September 2018 approved, so the timetable came from above the Bank.
The messaging standard moved under the same programme. An action plan developed within it committed the Bank to the international ISO 20022 format; the work of adjusting the settlement system to that standard is finished, and the Bank reports twenty-two of the twenty-eight organisations participating in it as having migrated their own internal systems.
The number a sender abroad is asked for runs to twenty-eight characters, effective since January 2013 and registered by the Central Bank. Its domestic part opens with four letters identifying the bank and continues with twenty alphanumeric characters. Once the money is inside, every system it passes through has the same operator.
How much Azerbaijani manat will I receive in Azerbaijan?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Azerbaijan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Azerbaijan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
