Federal Law No. 2 of 1971 fixes the shape, the proportions and the four colours and assigns none of them a meaning. Two federal publications supply readings of their own and the two do not match: the government portal gives red for bravery and black for strength of mind, while the flag guideline issued to government entities gives red for the sacrifices of an earlier generation and black for courage. Dubai's protocol department instead traces the palette to a classical Arabic couplet pairing white with deeds, green with plains, black with battles and red with swords.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

The dirham has been held at a fixed rate against the US dollar for decades, so almost all the movement in this pair is the Australian dollar’s own. The Emirates host a large working expatriate population, which makes money flow out of the country at least as often as into it.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Most countries that adopted the IBAN made it compulsory for sending. The United Arab Emirates made it compulsory for arriving as well. Government guidance states that from 2012 the use of the International Bank Account Number has been mandatory for all electronic payments and receipts within and outside the country, with payments made by credit card the exception. For someone about to be paid from abroad that flips the usual advice: the number is not a convenience to speed things along, it is the thing the transfer is expected to carry.
An IBAN does not replace a sort code and account number, the Central Bank of the UAE's own guidance says; it is an additional number carrying extra information, so that a bank overseas can identify the right account. The registry SWIFT maintains as registration authority for ISO 13616 records the Emirati format as 23 characters, effective from October 2011, built from the country code, two check digits, a three-digit bank identifier and a sixteen-digit account number.
There is a faster way to be paid inside the country, and it will not reach a sender in Australia. Al Etihad Payments describes its instant service as moving money across the UAE in seconds using a mobile number, an email address or a scanned code, framing it explicitly as domestic and as a way to avoid having to exchange an IBAN at all. Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the United Arab Emirates. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
