About the AUD/LKR rate
The AUD/LKR rate is how many LKR one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/LKR rate history.
Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, LKR → AUD, is on the receiving Sri Lankan rupee view, and sending Australian dollars to Sri Lanka is covered on the AUD → LKR transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.
The exchange rate in an Act of Parliament
Sri Lanka's exchange rate arrangement is not a policy the central bank announced; it is in an Act. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka Act, No. 16 of 2023 requires monetary policy to be conducted under flexible inflation targeting, supported by a flexible exchange rate regime, against a headline target of 5 per cent. The Bank's own description is that the exchange rate serves as an automatic stabiliser, and that it may intervene to prevent excessive volatility and to keep market conditions orderly. There is no band and no anchor currency.
Beside that openness sits a restriction of a kind few countries use. By Order of the Minister of Finance under section 8 of the Foreign Exchange Act No. 12 of 2017, gazetted on 16 June 2022, the limit on foreign currency a person may retain in their possession was reduced from US$15,000 to US$10,000 or its equivalent, with a fortnight allowed to deposit or sell anything above it.
Both sit on top of a sovereign debt position still being worked through. The International Monetary Fund recorded public debt falling from 125.8 to 105.7 per cent of gross domestic product between 2022 and 2024, and gross official reserves of US$6,122 million at the end of 2024, equal to three months of prospective imports. When Cyclone Ditwah struck in November 2025 the scheduled programme review was deferred and emergency financing of SDR 150.5 million was approved in its place that December.
Australian visitors are a measurable part of what comes in. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority recorded Australia as the sixth-largest source market in March 2026, with 11,197 arrivals out of 183,979.
