About the AUD/BDT rate

The AUD/BDT rate is how many BDT one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/BDT rate history.

The other directions of this rate: the reverse rate, BDT → AUD, is on the receiving Bangladeshi taka view, and sending Australian dollars to Bangladesh is covered on the AUD → BDT transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

What Bangladesh Bank's manual says about carrying taka

Bangladesh Bank's Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Transactions give two answers on taking taka abroad. Chapter 6 says a person may take out legal tender notes and coins "not exceeding Taka 500 only in value at any one time", a limit resting on a notification of 1 July 1948 issued under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947. Chapter 12, which deals with travel, says an outgoing passenger is permitted to take up to 10,000 taka in cash on each occasion. The ordinary reading of a rulebook with a general chapter and a travel chapter is that the specific provision governs the specific case; either way, both figures are small enough that the taka is not a currency anyone brings home in quantity.

The rate those notes carry has moved through two regimes in about two years. On 8 May 2024 the Bank issued a circular introducing a Crawling Peg Exchange Rate System, naming a crawling peg mid rate of 117.00 taka to the US dollar with immediate effect and letting scheduled banks trade around it; the circular it replaced dated from 2003. By the monetary policy statement covering July to December 2026 the crawl had gone as well, and the Bank states that it remains committed to a flexible, market-determined exchange rate regime.

Chapter 12 also sets the quota for foreign currency going the other way, and it is annual rather than per trip. Authorised dealers may release US$5,000 per adult per calendar year for travel to destinations in South Asia and Myanmar, and US$7,000 for anywhere else, Australia included, with the entitlement halved for children under twelve.

What holds the external accounts together is remittance. The Bank recorded inflows of US$32.75 billion over July to May of its 2026 financial year, growth of 19.07 per cent, against a trade deficit of US$22.2 billion.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
