A landlocked chunk of southern Africa shaped by great rivers, Zambia shares the thundering Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe and packs its parks with elephants and hippos.

  • It shares Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on Earth, with Zimbabwe.
  • The local name for the falls is 'Mosi-oa-Tunya', meaning 'the smoke that thunders'.
  • The mighty Zambezi River, which the country is named after, forms much of its southern border.
  • It's one of the world's major copper producers, a metal central to its economy.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A green field with an orange eagle in flight over a block of three vertical stripes of red, black and orange at the fly. Part I of the Schedule to the National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act declares that design, fixes the proportions at three to two and pins each colour to a British Colour Council shade - Spectrum Green 100, Union Jack Red 210, Jet Black 220 and Spectrum Orange 57 - and assigns none of them a meaning. It calls the bird simply an eagle. Zambian government pages supply readings the Act does not: green for the country's vegetation and agriculture, red for the struggle for freedom, black for the Zambian people, orange for copper and mineral wealth, and the eagle for freedom and the ability to rise above the nation's problems.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Zambia rebased its kwacha in 2013 by removing three zeros. Copper is so dominant in what the country exports that the currency has historically tracked the metal closely, giving this corridor a commodity link at both ends, since the Australian dollar behaves much the same way about its own minerals.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Zambia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/ZMW converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

A registration card the law requires you to keep and show

The identity a Zambian recipient produces is a statutory possession, not one acceptable document among several. Under the National Registration Act every person who has attained the age of sixteen must be registered, an unregistered person in a specified area must attend the nearest registrar within fourteen days, a holder must keep the card in safe custody, and the Chief Registrar or a registrar may require it to be produced for inspection. Failing to register is an offence in its own right.

Whoever hands over the money has been through a gate of their own. The rules of the national retail switch, administered by Zambia Electronic Clearing House Limited, make designation as a payment system participant or a licence from the Bank of Zambia a condition of joining, so an institution paying a recipient is one the central bank has admitted. The clearing house that administers those rules is owned by the Bank of Zambia together with eighteen commercial banks.

The statute behind that licensing is mid-change, and the new one is drafted around the person being paid. The National Payment System Act 2026 received assent on 31 March 2026 and repeals and replaces the earlier Act, but has not yet commenced, its start date to be appointed by the Minister. It defines a money transfer service as one where funds are received from a sender in the form of cash, a monetary instrument or any other form for the purpose of transferring a corresponding amount to a beneficiary through an intermediary or a third party.

Common questions

How much Zambian kwacha will I receive in Zambia?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Zambia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Zambia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
