A nation with three capitals and twelve official languages, South Africa wraps its neighbour Lesotho entirely inside its borders and hosts some of the planet's most famous safari country.

  • It has three capital cities: Pretoria (executive), Bloemfontein (judicial) and Cape Town (legislative).
  • It recognises 12 official languages, one of the highest counts of any country.
  • It completely surrounds the independent kingdom of Lesotho.
  • The first successful human heart transplant was performed in Cape Town in 1967.
  • Table Mountain in Cape Town is one of the oldest mountains on Earth and hosts thousands of plant species found nowhere else.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A green Y-shaped band separating a chilli red upper band and a blue lower band from a black triangle at the hoist, edged in white above and below and in gold where it meets the triangle. Schedule 1 to the constitution describes and sketches that design and gives no element a meaning, and the government's own account of the flag says no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colours. The one reading that account offers is that the central design can be read as diverse elements within South African society converging and taking the road ahead in unity.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The rand is the most heavily traded currency on the continent and the anchor three neighbouring currencies are pegged to. It is liquid enough to move sharply on global risk sentiment rather than local news. South Africans are the largest African-born community in Australia, which makes this the busiest corridor in this group.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in South Africa determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/ZAR converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Reported daily, signed above a threshold

Every inbound payment is reported, whatever its size. The South African Reserve Bank's Financial Surveillance Department states that reporting of all cross-border foreign exchange transactions by an authorised dealer is compulsory, and that those transactions are captured on the FinSurv Reporting System and reported to it daily, irrespective of value. The purpose is balance-of-payments and foreign-debt statistics and the analysis of cross-border flows.

The recipient's own signature has a threshold. The Reserve Bank's Currency and Exchanges guidelines for individuals, version 1.69 of 7 January 2026, require an integrated form for cross-border transactions, signed by the individual for inward and outward payments alike, but excuse it for inward payments under fifty thousand rand per transaction. At or above that figure the individual signs, and clause 6 of the declaration consents to the information being provided to the South African Revenue Service and the Financial Intelligence Centre.

Foreign banknotes carry a holding period. The same guidelines require residents to sell to authorised dealers, within thirty days, all foreign bank notes received from non-residents as payment for legitimate transactions, gratuities, tips and gifts included.

Domestically the money has had an alias to travel to since PayShap launched on 13 March 2023, letting a low-value payment be addressed by a unique identifier such as a cellphone number in place of an account number.

Common questions

How much South African rand will I receive in South Africa?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in South Africa can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in South Africa. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
