Perched at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen is home to Socotra, an island so isolated its dragon's blood trees grow nowhere else in the world.
Three equal horizontal bands of red, white and black. Article 156 of the constitution lists those three colours from the top and stops there, and the 1990 decree-law on the national flag adds only the shape, a rectangle two thirds as wide as it is long in three equal bands. Neither assigns a colour a meaning. The state reads the red for the revolution, the white for the revolution's principles and its purity, and the black for the era of darkness and reactionary rule.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Yemen has effectively operated two monetary areas since the conflict divided its banking system, and the rial has traded at materially different values depending on which authority’s notes are held. One national rate does not describe both halves of the country.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Three of the digits in a Yemeni account number are the currency it is held in. The guide published by the General Department of Payment Systems at the Central Bank of Yemen's Aden headquarters breaks the thirty characters left to right: the country code, two check digits, a four-letter bank identifier from the bank's international code, then a four-digit branch identifier from a list the Bank maintains. After those come three digits of currency code, two digits of account class, and only then thirteen digits of account number. The currency code is the ordinary international one, and for the rial it is 886, so the string a sender is handed already says what the money will land as.
The arrangement is recent, and its dates line up. The Bank announced on 28 April 2024 that it had begun activating the number for domestic and international transfers, having agreed the unification formula and the phases of application with the banks. The international register of account formats records the Yemeni entry as effective from July 2024, at the same thirty characters. Banks had three months from the regulatory framework's issue to comply, with penalties deducted from an offending bank's own account after that.
The instruction that bites hardest concerns mismatches: commercial banks are told to refuse incoming transfers whose account number does not conform to the approved specification, so a number written the old way is not a formatting preference. Two further points cut the other way. Issuing the number must be free, and financial inclusion is given as the reason. Every commercial bank must also provide, at no charge, a way to check a number's accuracy, by mobile phone or on its website - which a sender may use before sending anything.
One qualification belongs on all of it: every document above is published from Aden. The banking system has been administered from two centres since the conflict, and no equivalent material from the other was found.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
