A Polynesian nation in the South Pacific, Samoa jumped across the International Date Line in 2011, skipping a whole day to better align its calendar with trading partners like Australia and New Zealand.
In 2011 it skipped December 30 entirely, hopping over the International Date Line to change which side of the calendar it lived on.
Author Robert Louis Stevenson, of 'Treasure Island' fame, spent his final years in Samoa and is buried there.
It's considered a cradle of Polynesian culture, with traditions like the elaborate 'fa'a Samoa' way of life still central to daily living.
The traditional Samoan tattoo, or pe'a, is applied by hand using tools made from bone and tusk.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A red field with a blue canton bearing five white stars. The Schedule to the Official Flag and National Anthem of Samoa Act 1994 prescribes the flag in geometric detail, down to the vertical and horizontal units fixing the size and position of every star, and the one thing it interprets is the stars, which it names as representing the Southern Cross. It assigns the colours no meaning, and neither does the constitution. The government's own account of the country reads the red as courage and as a traditional Samoan colour, says the blue is taken to represent freedom, and gives the white no meaning of its own.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Established Samoan communities in Australia and New Zealand keep this route busy all year, and sending tends to be frequent and small rather than occasional and large, so fixed per-transfer costs bite harder here than they would on a single big send. The tālā is guided by a currency basket in which the Australian dollar features.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Samoa determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Most of the money arriving in Samoa reaches a household. A 2025 International Monetary Fund paper on the corridor puts household recipients at around 80 per cent in the 2023/24 financial year and at 87 per cent by October 2024, with non-profit institutions serving communities, predominantly churches, as the other notable group. In 2020-21 the average transfer a Samoan household received came to roughly a quarter of that household's monthly income, and went mainly on food, schooling and health care.
That paper is unusually direct about what the person collecting has to produce. The anti-money-laundering standards require no address for general customer due diligence, and none at all for the beneficiary of an incoming cross-border transaction. An address is asked of the sender only where other information is unavailable, and a national identity number, a customer identification number, or a date and place of birth serves in its place.
Asking for one anyway is a local addition. The Fund records that some countries make it routine over and above the standards, and that doing so disadvantages customers where street names, numbers and postcodes do not exist or are not used. The same passage sets out what can establish identity when the usual documents are missing: an expired foreign identity document, a consular document, bills, tax certificates or healthcare documents, each treated as another reliable and independent source. The standards body behind those rules says the same in its own guidance on financial inclusion, which lists an identity document without a photograph, an expired one, or a healthcare document among the less formal means a firm can use where the risk is low.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Samoa can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Samoa. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
