An archipelago of some 80 islands in the South Pacific, Vanuatu is a place where villagers dive from wooden towers with vines around their ankles, inspiring modern bungee jumping.

  • The land-diving ritual of Pentecost Island is widely credited as the inspiration for bungee jumping.
  • It sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and hosts several active volcanoes, including Mount Yasur.
  • It regularly ranks among the world's happiest nations despite modest incomes.
  • More than 100 distinct local languages are spoken across its islands, one of the highest densities on Earth.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Red and green bands split by a black horizontal Y edged in yellow, with a boar's tusk enclosing two crossed namele fern fronds in the black triangle at the hoist. The constitution has no flag provision. The red is conventionally read for blood and human unity, the green for the richness of the land, the black for the ni-Vanuatu people, and the yellow Y for the layout of the islands and the light of the gospel, with the tusk for prosperity and the fern fronds for peace.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Vatu figures are quoted in whole units with no subdivision, so nothing here carries cents and rounding happens at the unit itself. Ni-Vanuatu working in Australia and New Zealand send home a meaningful share of the country’s external income, which makes the route busier than the population alone would suggest.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Vanuatu determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/VUV converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

When a payment is finished and when it settles

The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu is both owner and operator of the electronic system that moves money between banks in the country, which it runs under the National Payment System Act No. 8 of 2021. The system has two components and they behave very differently.

The first handles high-value and high-priority payments one at a time. A customer instructs their bank to make the payment out of available funds, settlement happens the instant the instruction enters the system, and once complete it cannot be dishonoured or reversed. The second component clears everything else. It runs four sessions a day from Monday to Friday: 8.40am to 10am, 10.10am to 11.30am, 11.40am to 1pm, and 1.10pm to 3.45pm.

Inside that second component are two modes, and the difference is exactly the one a person watching a balance notices. Electronic funds transfer processes direct credits, and is available only between the opening of business and the initial cut-off. Instant funds transfer takes a single low-value credit and executes it immediately on receipt from the sending bank, but settles it in deferred net mode during the regular clearing sessions, which run between an 8.30am opening and a 4pm cut-off on an operating day. In both modes the clearing house works out the multilateral net positions and sends a settlement instruction to the gross settlement component to finish the job. So the money can be usable at one end of the day and settled between the banks at the other.

Common questions

How much Vanuatu vatu will I receive in Vanuatu?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Vanuatu can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Vanuatu. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
