A small, easygoing country wedged between Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay won the very first football World Cup on home soil and has been punching above its weight ever since.
It hosted and won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1930.
Montevideo, its capital, is home to roughly a third of the entire national population.
It became the first country in the world to give every primary-school child a laptop, under Plan Ceibal.
Cattle comfortably outnumber people, making beef a cornerstone of its economy and its asado barbecues.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Nine horizontal stripes, five white and four blue, with a white canton bearing the golden Sun of May, a radiant disc with a face bordered by sixteen rays. The constitution says nothing about the flag. The law of 16 December 1828 gave it nine sky-blue stripes on white and the reform of 12 July 1830 cut those to four, which with white at the top and bottom is the nine flown today; neither law explains any of it. The nine stripes are conventionally read as the nine departments the country had at the time.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Uruguay runs a heavily dollarised financial system: property, cars and other large purchases are commonly priced and settled in US dollars, while wages and everyday spending stay in pesos. That split matters for a sender, because a peso transfer covers ordinary living costs but not the kind of purchase Uruguayans quote in another currency.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Uruguay determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The withdrawal right, and what opening the account takes
Somebody in Uruguay expecting a lump sum from overseas has a statutory answer to the question of getting it out. The financial inclusion law provides that funds in a basic account are withdrawable at any time without prior notice, and includes among the account's guaranteed terms one free monthly withdrawal of the entire credited amount, in a single extraction. That is a legislated right and not a bank's policy, which matters when the sum arriving is larger than a normal month's activity and a branch might otherwise treat it as an exception to be arranged.
The rest of the account's terms are fixed in the same article, so a recipient knows before opening one what it will and will not cost them. Nothing may be charged to open, acquire, maintain or close it. No minimum balance may be required. Balance enquiries are unlimited and free, and each month the holder gets a minimum of five free withdrawals across the network and eight free domestic transfers, together with a debit card that works for cash withdrawal and electronic payment, and two replacements of the card at no cost. A person may hold one account on those terms, at an institution in Uruguay.
Opening it turns on the documentation the regulations permit. The institution may require certification of the estimated amount of funds expected, together with further due diligence information to the standard the Banco Central del Uruguay sets, and the holder then presents documentation containing the account identification details to the employer who will credit it. The choice of institution is the account holder's, and the same basic characteristics extend to people registered under the simplified tax regime.
How much Uruguayan peso will I receive in Uruguay?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Uruguay can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Uruguay. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
