The largest country entirely within Europe, Ukraine rolls out endless black-earth wheat fields that helped earn it the nickname 'breadbasket of Europe'.
Two equal horizontal bands, blue over yellow. Article 20 of the constitution calls it a banner of two equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow, gives the colours no meaning, and leaves the description of the state symbols to a law adopted by two thirds of parliament. The order of the bands and the proportion of 2:3 come instead from the resolution by which parliament adopted the flag in 1992. The colours are conventionally read as a blue sky above golden fields of ripe wheat.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Ukraine moved the hryvnia to a fixed rate at the start of the full-scale invasion and later shifted to managed flexibility, alongside controls on moving money out of the country. Transfers in are supported; getting value back out is the constrained direction.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Ukraine determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

In a resolution of 28 January 2018 the National Bank of Ukraine ordered adoption of the international account number, changing how every account in the country is addressed. Banks began opening accounts in the new format on 5 August 2019, and from 1 November 2019 it was compulsory for all Ukrainian banks for transfers in domestic and foreign currency, cross-border transfers included. A further resolution of 30 August 2021 extended the requirement to non-bank payment service providers and to issuers of electronic money. The Ukrainian number runs to twenty-nine characters: the country code, two check digits, a six-digit bank code and nineteen characters of account.
The rail beneath that address was replaced in the middle of a war. A new generation of the System of Electronic Payments went into service on 1 April 2023, built on the ISO 20022 messaging standard and running twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, without the pauses the previous system took. The Bank's deputy governor described it as one of the biggest migrations ever undertaken by financial institutions of Ukraine. That rebuilt rail is domestic. Ukraine is not inside the geographical scope of the single euro payments area. The European Commission's list of the enlargement partners admitted across 2024 and 2025 does not include it.
Getting at the money is where the published ceilings sit. The Bank's guidance states that the equivalent of up to a hundred thousand hryvnia may be withdrawn in cash from an account each day, in domestic or foreign currency, with a separate weekly ceiling on cash taken from a machine using a hryvnia card. Identifying the person needs no paper at all: a resolution of 2 October 2020 lets a citizen holding a digital passport in the state's own application be identified remotely through the National Bank's identity service. Cash is not how the country transacts. Of 8,654.4 million card operations in 2024, 94.6 per cent by number were cashless.

How much Ukrainian hryvnia will I receive in Ukraine?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Ukraine can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Ukraine. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
