A twin-island nation off the coast of Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago gave the world the steelpan and Carnival, and floats on some of the Caribbean's richest oil and gas reserves.

  • The steelpan, one of the few acoustic instruments invented in the 20th century, was created in Trinidad.
  • It is home to the Pitch Lake, the largest natural deposit of asphalt in the world.
  • Its Carnival is one of the most famous street festivals in the Caribbean.
  • Calypso and soca music both originated here.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field crossed by a black diagonal band edged in white, running from the upper hoist to the lower fly. The National Emblems of Trinidad and Tobago (Regulation) Act describes that geometry and gives the colours no meaning. The government's own published account of the flag reads red for the warmth of the sun and the vitality of the land and its people, black for strength and for the dedication of a people joined by one bond, and white for the sea that binds the islands and the equality of all under the sun.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Natural gas and petrochemicals, not tourism, are what this economy runs on, which sets it apart from most of the Caribbean. The local dollar is held in a narrow range against the US dollar, and access to foreign exchange within the country has been rationed at times, so what a recipient can convert matters as much as the rate.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Trinidad and Tobago determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/TTD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Who operates the retail systems, and who registers a payout business

The retail payment systems in Trinidad and Tobago are operated by a company incorporated in September 1994 as a joint venture between four major financial institutions. It runs the automated clearing house, the electronic cheque clearing service and the national debit card network, and in the electronic cheque clearing arrangement the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago is identified as the settlement agency. The system the Bank runs itself is the real-time gross settlement system, which it describes as the only truly systemically important payment system in the country and through which all settlements are conducted.

Oversight of the whole set sits in one place. The Bank's payments system unit oversees four systems, and its statutory responsibility for payment systems, remittance services expressly included, was written into the Central Bank Act by a proclamation of December 2008.

A business that pays money out meets two registers kept by two different bodies. The Central Bank registers payment service providers under section 36(cc) of the Central Bank Act, and the enumerated payment services include the provision of remittance services; it publishes that register alongside a second one for electronic money issuers, created by an order that took effect on 4 August 2020 and amended in 2023. Separately, money or value transfer services are a supervised category for anti-money-laundering purposes under the First Schedule to the Proceeds of Crime Act, supervised by the Financial Intelligence Unit. A supervised business must register with it within three months of commencing business or of incorporation, whichever is earlier.

Common questions

How much Trinidad and Tobago dollar will I receive in Trinidad and Tobago?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Trinidad and Tobago can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Trinidad and Tobago. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
