Straddling Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus, Turkey is the bridge where two continents meet and where Istanbul has served as an imperial capital for well over a millennium.

  • It sits on two continents, with Istanbul spanning both Europe and Asia.
  • Istanbul was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires in turn.
  • The surreal fairy-chimney landscape of Cappadocia is dotted with entire cities carved underground.
  • The ancient site of Gobekli Tepe here is often called the world's oldest known temple complex.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field charged with a white crescent and five-pointed star. The constitution, the flag law and its regulation all describe the flag without assigning the colour or the charges any meaning. The crescent is conventionally read as a symbol of Islam. The star is a later addition, carried in eight-pointed form on Ottoman army and navy flags before it took five points in the nineteenth century.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The lira was redenominated in 2005 after a period of very high inflation, and inflation has remained a defining feature of it since. That makes historical comparisons on this pair far less meaningful than on a stable-currency corridor.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Turkey determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/TRY converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Where the rule stops applying

Turkey's rules on the International Bank Account Number are unusually explicit about direction. The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey's communique requires every bank to generate an IBAN for each customer account subject to money transfer, and requires that the IBAN be validated for incoming money transfers where the beneficiary's account number is specified as one. It goes further for money heading to the European Economic Area, where validating and using the beneficiary's IBAN is mandatory.

Then it carves out the leg that crosses the border. The same communique states that the use of an IBAN is not mandatory for transfers made by non-resident banks and other financial institutions from the accounts they hold with correspondent banks in Turkey. An overseas payment typically travels that way, which means the international leg is not obliged to carry the number even though the Turkish leg is built around it. The practical reading for a recipient is that the IBAN is what makes the domestic crediting work.

Domestically the same central bank operates the rails the number is used on: an electronic funds transfer system settling interbank lira payments in real time, and an instant transfer system launched in January 2021. The format they carry is 26 alphanumeric characters, effective from April 2007, with a five-digit code for the payment service provider and a reserved digit ahead of sixteen alphanumeric characters of account number.

Common questions

How much Turkish lira will I receive in Turkey?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Turkey can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Turkey. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
