A Polynesian kingdom of some 170 islands in the South Pacific, Tonga is the only nation in the region never brought under foreign rule and still ruled by its own monarch.

  • It is the last remaining Polynesian kingdom, ruled by its own monarchy.
  • It was never formally colonised by a foreign power.
  • Sitting just west of the International Date Line, it is one of the first places on Earth to see each new day.
  • The 2022 eruption of its Hunga Tonga volcano was one of the most powerful ever recorded.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field with a white canton in the upper hoist bearing a red couped cross. Clause 47 of the 1875 constitution forbids the flag ever being altered but never describes it: it names no colours, no cross and no proportions, and identifies the flag only by reference, as the one King George was already flying. So no Tongan instrument assigns the design a meaning, and the readings in circulation, the cross for the kingdom's Christian foundation and the red for the blood of Christ, are conventional rather than official.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Few countries lean on money sent home as heavily as Tonga does, where it is worth a large fraction of national income, and Australia is one of the two main origins alongside New Zealand. The paʻanga is set against a basket of currencies, so it does not follow any single one exactly.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Tonga determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/TOP converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Licences that face one way

Under the Foreign Exchange Control Act a licence of type A, type B or type C is required to conduct foreign exchange business in Tonga at all, and the classes point in different directions. The National Reserve Bank of Tonga publishes who holds which, and the distinction matters to somebody being paid: type A dealers can both send and receive, while a separate group of type B dealers is inward-only, licensed to take money coming from abroad and not to send it out. A business that can only receive is a business built for this direction of travel.

The same list identifies sub-agents operating under banking licences at twelve locations, among them shops, service stations and resorts, that facilitate cash payouts. That is the regulator itself describing counter payout as a licensed channel. Tonga does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry, so an account is identified by the bank's identifier code and the account number.

Common questions

How much Tongan paʻanga will I receive in Tonga?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Tonga can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Tonga. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
