The northernmost country in Africa and the point where the continent reaches closest to Europe, Tunisia mixes Mediterranean beaches, Roman ruins and the sands of the Sahara.

  • It is the northernmost country on the African continent.
  • The ancient city of Carthage, Rome's great rival, stood on its coast near modern Tunis.
  • Its Roman amphitheatre at El Jem is among the largest and best preserved anywhere.
  • Parts of the original Star Wars were filmed in its southern desert, which lent its name to the planet Tatooine.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field bearing a central white circle in which a red crescent encloses a red five-pointed star. Article 8 of the constitution describes the flag in one sentence and leaves the detail to law, and the flag law fixes the geometry in fractions of the flag's length without assigning any element a meaning. The constitution's preamble says the blood of martyrs drew the two colours of the national banner. Reading the crescent and star as emblems of Islam is conventional rather than official.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The Tunisian dinar cannot legally be taken out of the country and is not traded abroad, so it cannot be bought in advance and leftover notes are awkward to convert back. Like its Libyan neighbour it divides into thousandths, which is why quotes carry an extra decimal place.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Tunisia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/TND converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The account an ordinary recipient is not eligible to hold

Tunisia will let money arrive and will not, as an ordinary matter, let a resident keep it in foreign currency. The account that would permit that is the compte de personnes physiques residentes, created by Circulaire aux Intermediaires Agrees n° 2017-04 of 23 June 2017, which the Central Bank publishes among its current circulars, and its second article confines eligibility to seven categories: Tunisians transferring their habitual residence from abroad or holding assets legally acquired abroad, foreigners resident in Tunisia, holders of stakes in resident exporting companies, exchange sub-delegates, providers of services to non-residents established outside Tunisia, diplomats and public-sector agents posted abroad, and staff engaged by resident employers for missions abroad of at least six months.

What may be credited to such an account is a second and separately closed list. Article 5 enumerates income and the proceeds of assets legally acquired abroad, defined shares of distributed profits and of surrendered currency, remuneration from non-residents for services, diplomats' salary savings, expatriation indemnities and the proceeds of disposing of foreign assets, and then closes it: any other operation crediting the account is subject to the prior authorisation of the Central Bank of Tunisia. A gift or family maintenance transfer is not among the enumerated items.

The paperwork is stamped at the moment of credit, not filed afterwards. Article 7 requires the authorised intermediary to stamp the original of the document justifying each credit, write the amount credited on it, keep a copy and return the original to the holder. Older personal accounts had to be converted into this form by 31 December 2017, so an account described under the earlier circulars is being described under a regime that has ended.

None of this touches how the money reaches Tunisia in the first place. The Central Bank states that transfers ordered from abroad may be effected through its own accounts with its various correspondents abroad, so the arriving leg is a correspondent-bank one and the rules above apply to what happens once it has landed.

Common questions

How much Tunisian dinar will I receive in Tunisia?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Tunisia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Tunisia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
