A tiny landlocked kingdom tucked between South Africa and Mozambique, ruled by one of the world's last absolute monarchies and famous for its exuberant traditional festivals. Eswatini changed its name in 2018 to stop being confused with Switzerland.
It's one of the last remaining absolute monarchies in the world.
It was known as Swaziland until it was officially renamed Eswatini in 2018.
Its Umhlanga, or Reed Dance, is one of Africa's most colourful traditional ceremonies.
It's one of the smallest countries in Africa, landlocked between South Africa and Mozambique.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A central red band edged in yellow between two blue bands, with a black-and-white ox-hide shield of the Emasotsha regiment, two spears and a tasselled staff laid across the centre. Eswatini's government gives red for past battles, blue for peace and stability, yellow for the country's resources, the shield and spears for protection, and the shield's black and white for white and black people living together peacefully. No law assigns those meanings; the 1968 Act prescribes the flag with a drawing.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Eswatini belongs to the Common Monetary Area alongside Lesotho and Namibia, so the lilangeni is fixed one for one with the rand and rand notes spend freely there. The country was renamed from Swaziland in 2018, which still causes mismatches in addresses and account records.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Eswatini determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Eswatini changed its name in 2018 and its payment rails did not follow. The Central Bank of Eswatini publishes the rules of its own real-time gross settlement system under the title Swaziland Interbank Payment and Settlement System, defines the clearing house in those same rules as the Swaziland Automated Electronic Clearing House, and takes its authority from the Central Bank of Swaziland Order of 1974 as amended. The Bank's strategy document uses the same names.
That is not merely archival. When the Bank launched the fast payments module of the Eswatini Payment Switch on 11 December 2024, one of the three institutions live on it that day was the Swaziland Building Society. A recipient reading their own paperwork, or a sender checking an institution's name against a list, will meet the older form in places where the money actually moves.
The Bank's own five-year strategy is unusually direct about what Eswatini does not yet have. It names the absence of a regulatory framework to govern the operations and oversight of money transfer operators, and a lack of cross-border mobile money services to complement remittances, and it makes developing a more enabling cross-border remittance licensing regime one of its strategic imperatives, with research into what deters providers from applying as the first action under it. A recipient is therefore being served by a sector the central bank has said in writing it intends to regulate more fully.
How much Eswatini lilangeni will I receive in Eswatini?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Eswatini can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Eswatini. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
