The smallest and most densely packed country in Central America, strung with volcanoes and a Pacific coastline that surfers quietly adore. El Salvador does a lot in a small footprint.

  • It's the smallest country in mainland Central America.
  • It's nicknamed 'the Land of Volcanoes' for the chain of peaks running through it.
  • It has no Caribbean coast, facing only the Pacific Ocean.
  • Its Pacific breaks, like those at El Tunco, draw surfers from around the world.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of blue, white and blue, all of the same size. The Ley de Simbolos Patrios (Decreto Legislativo 115 of 1972) describes the flag in exactly those terms and assigns the colours no meaning at all; the familiar reading of blue as the two oceans of Central America and white as peace comes from the Presidency's national symbols page, not from the statute. The white band carries either the coat of arms, a triangle with five volcanoes, a rainbow and a liberty cap, or, on the flags flown over public buildings and carried in parades, the motto 'Dios, Union, Libertad' in its place.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The colón is still legal tender in law at a fixed 8.75 to the US dollar, but it stopped circulating after El Salvador dollarised in 2001 and no recipient will be paid in it. A transfer here settles in US dollars in practice, whatever the pair on the screen says.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in El Salvador determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The two ways a remittance is recorded, and what the counter writes down

El Salvador publishes the two ways money arrives side by side. The Banco Central de Reserva sorts remittance operations into remesa con abono a cuenta, credited to an account, and remesa cobrada en ventanilla o sin abono a cuenta, collected at a counter or otherwise reaching the beneficiary without an account credit. It compiles the series monthly from data supplied by banks, remittance companies, federations, telephone companies and digital wallet providers, so the split between the two is a published figure rather than an impression. On the July 2026 observation the counter-or-unbanked category ran to 1.58 million operations against 0.70 million credited to an account, more than two to one. Somebody expecting money here does not need an account to receive it, and on that month's figures most operations did not use one.

At the counter the identification is the beneficiary's own. The central bank's technical norm for entities that send or receive money requires, at article 18 paragraph (c), that the transaction record carry the beneficiary's identity document or passport number where payment is made in national territory. Only entities registered with the Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero may offer the service at all. The Superintendencia publishes the list of subagents naming the agent each one works under, and the agent stays fully liable to the beneficiary for what its subagents do. At five thousand United States dollars or more, an electronic form declaring the purpose of the operation is required.

For money going to an account, the identifier is an international one. El Salvador has been in the ISO 13616 registry since December 2016, with a twenty-eight character number carrying the prefix SV. Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are registered too, so the Central American mainland is better served for international account numbers than most of the continent to its south.

Common questions

How much Salvadoran colón will I receive in El Salvador?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in El Salvador can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in El Salvador. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
