Two tiny volcanic islands straddling the Equator in the Gulf of Guinea, São Tomé and Príncipe is Africa's second-smallest country and once ran on cocoa grown on jungle-clad plantations.

  • It's the second-smallest country in Africa by both area and population.
  • The islands sit right on the Equator in the Atlantic's Gulf of Guinea.
  • It was once one of the world's leading cocoa producers, and chocolate is still tied to its identity.
  • Portuguese is the official language, a legacy of its history as a Portuguese colony.
  • The islands are volcanic, with dramatic peaks like the needle-shaped Pico Cão Grande rising straight from the forest.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of green, yellow and green with a red triangle at the hoist and two black stars on the central yellow band, which Article 14 of the constitution makes one and a half times the width of each of the others. That article prescribes the design and assigns none of it a meaning. The presidency's own national symbols page does: it reads the triangle's shape as equality and its red as the struggle for independence, the two stars as the islands of the archipelago, and yellow, green and red as the colours of the liberation movement, which it calls the Pan-African colours. It gives the black nothing.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

São Tomé and Príncipe holds the dobra at a fixed euro parity by its own decision, taken under its central bank’s organic law, with the 2009 cooperation agreement with Portugal supplying a credit facility and a policy undertaking rather than the parity itself. It cut three zeros from the currency in 2018. Two small islands with a cocoa-growing history make one of Africa’s smallest economies, and few providers quote the currency at all.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in São Tomé and Príncipe determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/STN converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Where the counters are

The counters in Sao Tome and Principe are few and unevenly placed, and the central bank says so in those terms. Its payment systems report for 2017 counts six banking institutions and twenty-three branches, records that the Agua Grande district held seventeen of them with the autonomous region of Principe and the Me-Zochi district on nine per cent each, and calls the distribution a strong geographic asymmetry. Coverage averaged 8,740 inhabitants per branch.

The central bank runs much of the machinery itself. It manages the technological platform of the SWIFT network, shared with the financial institutions since 2005, and developed and operates the interbank clearing system that handles cheques and the domestic card network, with large-value settlement on a separate system above a defined threshold. The card and cash machine network has run since 2011 under a payment systems company in which the central bank became majority shareholder by decree in 2017, settling twice a day at the central bank and exclusively in national currency.

Who may hand money to a recipient is a matter of public record. The 2018 national payment system law permits the central bank, where justified, to award the management of a payment system to a single operator on an exclusive basis, and requires a bank or provider intending to serve clients through an agent to notify the central bank of the agent's name and address and its controls, providing that no agent may carry out any activity before being entered in a register the central bank keeps open to the public, and that the principal must ensure agents tell clients in whose name they act.

The recipient carries part of the paperwork themselves. Under the exchange law, authorised dealers must verify the reality and nature of an operation before carrying it out, and the interested parties must supply the evidence needed to characterise it legally and economically. The same law lets deposit accounts in dobras or any foreign currency be freely opened and operated by residents and non-residents alike, without restriction.

Common questions

How much São Tomé and Príncipe dobra will I receive in São Tomé and Príncipe?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in São Tomé and Príncipe can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in São Tomé and Príncipe. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
