The world's youngest country, South Sudan only became independent in 2011. It sits along the White Nile, where vast wetlands host one of Earth's largest wildlife migrations.

  • It became the world's newest internationally recognised nation when it gained independence in 2011.
  • The Sudd, a giant swamp fed by the White Nile, is one of the largest wetlands on the planet.
  • Its Boma-Jonglei landscape hosts a mass antelope migration rivalling the more famous Serengeti one.
  • English is its official language, chosen at independence.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of black, red and green separated by thin white stripes, with a sky-blue triangle at the hoist bearing a yellow star. Article 7 of the Transitional Constitution leaves the flag to be prescribed by law and assigns it no meaning. The Office of the President publishes a reading it credits to the National Flag Act 2011: black for the people, white for peace, red for the blood of the martyrs shed during the struggle for liberation, green for the land, agriculture and natural resources, blue for the waters and skies of South Sudan, and the star's yellow for the nucleus formation of the country and its resilience.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

South Sudan created its pound at independence in 2011, and the economy has since depended on oil piped out through Sudan, tying the currency to a route the country does not control. Banking reach is thin outside the main towns, and US dollars carry most larger payments.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in South Sudan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/SSP converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Three inward corridors, and a payment system still being built

South Sudan's inbound corridors are few enough to be listed, and Australia is on the list. The assessment of the country's payment infrastructure published by the United Nations Capital Development Fund with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development records that correspondent banking dominates the remittances space, with Australia, Kenya and Uganda being the inward remittance corridors. It separately notes that correspondent and SWIFT-based international remittances are used for larger transfers that do not require a cash pickup.

The infrastructure that money would otherwise arrive on is still being assembled. A Bank of South Sudan circular of 29 September 2025 provides that the Bank shall operate the national payment system infrastructure, listing a real-time gross settlement system, an automated clearing house, a central securities depository and cross-border payment systems. The assessment records that with both large-value and retail systems yet to be implemented or operational there is dependence on correspondent relationships and bilateral agreements, and that the country has not yet adopted a national retail payments switch.

Where the counters are matters more than usual. The same assessment counts thirty-three banks and eighty-nine branches, and records that more than ninety per cent of banks, their branches and remittance service providers are in Juba, that cards issued in South Sudan cannot be used in neighbouring states, and that it is common for South Sudanese people to travel to Kenya or Uganda to receive remittances.

Common questions

How much South Sudanese pound will I receive in South Sudan?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in South Sudan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in South Sudan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
