A city, an island and a country all at once, Singapore transformed a swampy port into one of the world's richest nations - with a skyline crowned by a rooftop infinity pool and a supertree-filled garden.

  • It's one of only a few sovereign city-states in the world, packing an entire country into a single city.
  • Changi Airport features the world's tallest indoor waterfall, a seven-storey cascade called the Rain Vortex.
  • It's home to the world's first night zoo, the Night Safari, open after dark.
  • The national symbol, the Merlion, is a mythical creature that's half lion, half fish.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Two equal horizontal sections of red over white, with a white crescent moon beside five white stars arranged in a circle in the canton at the top left. The National Symbols Act 2022 assigns a meaning to every element in its First Schedule: red for universal fellowship and equality, white for pervading and everlasting purity and virtue, the crescent moon for a young nation on the ascendant, and the five stars for the nation's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Singapore is a regional banking hub, so AUD→SGD transfers are often fast and competitive - but a tight headline rate can hide a flat fee that stings on smaller amounts. Singapore’s own instant payment system reaches most local accounts, so the last leg is quick; what varies is whether a provider hands off to it or sends a slower bank wire, and that choice is rarely visible in the quote.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Singapore determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/SGD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The name a sender will see

Receiving by proxy in Singapore is something the recipient sets up in advance. The Association of Banks in Singapore sets out the steps: log in, link a mobile number or the national identity number to an account, confirm with a one-time password, and enter a name that will be used to identify you to the sender. The sender is then shown that name and confirms it before the transfer completes, so the recipient chooses what a stranger sees.

The identifiers go wider than a phone number: the Association lists the mobile number, the national identity or foreign identification number, the Unique Entity Number used by organisations, and a virtual payment address. Those identifiers are drawn from what the bank already holds from account opening, so an attempt to register somebody else's identity number against an account is rejected at that point. A recipient who changes mobile number without re-registering stops being reachable that way.

The Association's cross-border linkages run to Thailand, India and Malaysia, and Australia is not among them, so a sender there reaches the underlying account by correspondent banking and the proxy governs only what happens afterwards. One further duty attaches to whoever receives it: the Association tells customers that money arriving from an unknown source should be reported to their bank so it can be authorised for return, on the ground that using money belonging to somebody else is a criminal offence.

Common questions

How much Singapore dollar will I receive in Singapore?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Singapore can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Singapore. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
