A long, lake-dotted Nordic country where design, meatballs and Nobel Prizes are all serious business. Sweden has some 267,000 islands, more than almost any nation on Earth.
It has around 267,000 islands, one of the highest counts of any country in the world.
The Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, funded by the will of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel.
The furniture giant IKEA, the music of ABBA, and the seatbelt's three-point design all came from Sweden.
'Allemansrätten', the right to roam, lets anyone camp and hike freely across most of the countryside.
In the far north the summer sun never fully sets, giving weeks of midnight sun.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A yellow cross on a blue field, the cross set off-centre toward the hoist. The flag act prescribes the design, the proportions and the colours, and assigns the colours no meaning. Blue and gold are the colours of the national arms: the greater arms is a blue shield quartered by a gold cross, with three gold crowns in each of two of its quarters. Sweden's cross form is conventionally traced to the Danish flag.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Sweden is in the European Union but floats its krona freely, and it has a reputation as one of the more volatile developed-market currencies. Sweden is also close to cashless in daily life, so a recipient will almost certainly want an account transfer rather than notes.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Sweden determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The Riksbank operates Sweden's instant rail itself. It describes its payment system as running two settlement services: one for large payments and one for small and instant payments, open twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. Elsewhere that second job usually belongs to a private clearing company, and in Sweden it does not.
The app most people in Sweden actually use to be paid will not help here, and the Riksbank has said so recently and directly. In a January 2026 notice on European work to link national mobile payment systems together, it records that neither Sweden's own scheme nor any other Swedish actor is participating in that cooperation. The Riksbank notes separately that it will offer the market a cross-currency instant settlement service during 2026. Until something of that kind carries the traffic, an overseas payment reaches Sweden through correspondent banking and lands in an account.
The identifier a sender needs is the IBAN, and the organisation that took the Swedish format to the ISO registry was the Swedish Bankers' Association. On the settlement side the central bank does the work itself; on the identifier side it was the banks' own trade body that registered the standard. The entry it lodged runs to 24 characters, effective from April 2007: the country code, two check digits, a three-digit bank identifier, sixteen digits and a final check digit.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Sweden can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Sweden. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
