Straddling the Nile in northeast Africa, Sudan quietly holds more ancient pyramids than Egypt, clustered around the ruins of the once-mighty Kingdom of Kush.
Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt, with over 200 built by the ancient Kingdom of Kush.
The Blue Nile and White Nile meet at Khartoum to form the main Nile River.
The Nubian pyramids at Meroë are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For decades it was the largest country in Africa by area, until South Sudan split away in 2011.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of red, white and black with a green triangle at the hoist. The National Flag Act 1993 fixes the shape, the proportions and the geometry of the triangle and assigns the colours no meaning at all. The state's published reading gives the red for the martyrs and the struggle, the white for peace, optimism and light and for the White Flag revolt of 1924, the green for prosperity and goodness, and the black for Sudan's African belonging and for the origin of the country's name.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
When South Sudan separated in 2011 the pound did not go with it, and two distinct currencies now carry that name. Conflict since 2023 has badly disrupted banking across Sudan, so whether a transfer can be delivered at all is settled well before anything about pricing.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Sudan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The account update a recipient may have to complete first
The obstacle a recipient in Sudan is most likely to meet is their own account record. In August 2026 the Central Bank of Sudan issued a clarification statement directing all banks to update customer data and classify accounts, requiring customers to provide approved documents. The Bank states that the deadline was extended to the end of 2026 and that digital identity verification is being used for the process. An account that has not been brought up to date is a live obstacle, not a historical one.
Identity in Sudan has been applied for in person. The assessment of the country's payment infrastructure published in May 2023 by the United Nations Capital Development Fund with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development recorded that all applications for the national identity card had to be made in person, and that the know-your-customer information used to access a financial service is the national identity number carried in the passport and the personal identity card. It recorded no analogous process for a migrant, who must instead provide a passport and regular registration documents from the immigration authorities.
A national instant payment system does not exist. The Central Bank has published a public tender seeking companies to develop and implement one. What the 2023 assessment described was a real-time gross settlement system owned and operated by the Central Bank and launched in 2008, an electronic cheque clearing system launched in 2006 and integrated with it, and a national switch with the banks as direct participants. That was the position recorded at fieldwork conducted before April 2023, and this page does not assert what is running now.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Sudan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Sudan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
