Nicknamed the 'land of a thousand hills', Rwanda is a compact, mountainous country where mountain gorillas roam volcanic forests and the capital, Kigali, is famed for being remarkably clean.
It's one of the best places on Earth to see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild, in Volcanoes National Park.
Plastic bags have been banned since 2008, part of a national push for cleanliness.
Once a month, citizens take part in Umuganda, a morning of community service where even the capital's traffic pauses.
It's one of only a handful of countries where women hold a majority of seats in the national parliament.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of blue, yellow and green, the blue covering the upper half, with a golden sun and rays in the upper fly separated from the disc by a blue ring. The constitution describes it in those terms and assigns no meanings, leaving the details to specific laws, and the law it defers to does assign them. Article 5 of the 2008 flag law gives green for the hope of prosperity through the effective use of Rwandan strength and resources, yellow for economic development, blue for happiness and peace, and the golden sun and its rays for the light that progressively enlightens all people, referring to unity, transparency and the fight against ignorance. The same readings were first enacted in the constitutional revision of 31 December 2001, which replaced the flag flown at the time of the genocide.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Rwanda has pushed retail payments towards phones and cards as deliberate policy, and cash carries less of the load in Kigali than regional averages would suggest. Arriving money often lands in a mobile wallet, so a recipient’s number and its registration details matter as much as bank particulars.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Rwanda determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
What is accepted when there is no account and no wallet
A beneficiary in Rwanda who holds no account at all still has a defined way to be paid. Regulation N° 06/2018 on money remittance services, published in the Official Gazette of 2 April 2018, provides that where the beneficiary does not have a bank account or e-wallet account, payments shall only be made upon the provision of accepted means of identification such as the national identification card, the driving licence or the passport. Those three are named in the instrument, so a recipient in that position knows in advance what will satisfy the counter.
The same article sets out where the money may go and in what. Funds are to be disbursed to a beneficiary who maintains a bank account, to e-money wallets with an agent, through a cash machine or by any other digital means. It also leaves the payout currency to the parties, providing that a payment transaction shall be executed in the currency agreed between them, which makes that something to settle before the transfer rather than discover at collection.
The counter itself is regulated on the way in. A licensed provider may operate through agents, must maintain an updated list of them and submit it to the central bank annually, and must retain transaction information for ten years. Under the 2021 law governing the payment system a provider using agents must obtain prior approval, and the agent must disclose that it is acting as a representative, so the person behind the counter is required to say whose agent they are. Settlement of the final leg occurs in National Bank of Rwanda money, across the Bank's own books.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Rwanda can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Rwanda. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
