A landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, Serbia sits where the Sava meets the Danube - and where, legend holds, more Roman emperors were born than anywhere outside Rome.
Serbian law defines two flags. The National flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, blue and white in bands of equal height; the State flag is that same tricolour with the Lesser coat of arms over it, the arms' centre shifted toward the hoist by one seventh of the flag's total length. The arms are a red shield bearing a silver double-headed eagle between two golden lilies in the base, with a smaller red shield on its breast carrying a silver cross between four firesteels, the shield crowned with a golden crown. Article 7 of the constitution names both flags and leaves their appearance to law; neither it nor the flag law assigns any of it a meaning. The government publishes the readings of the colours that circulate without adopting them. Red, blue and white are conventionally called the Pan-Slavic colours.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Serbia manages the dinar against the euro rather than letting it float, and the National Bank intervenes regularly to keep it there. Many prices in Serbia are quoted or thought of in euros even where dinars are what changes hands.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Serbia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Serbian law leaves the timing of a conversion with the person receiving the money. Article 35 of the Law on Foreign Exchange Operations requires a resident legal entity, a branch of a foreign legal entity and an entrepreneur to hold foreign exchange in accounts with banks or to sell it to them. Resident individuals are not in that list.
Article 35 also has the National Bank of Serbia prescribe to banks the conditions for opening and maintaining foreign exchange accounts and residents' foreign exchange savings deposits. Money sent by a family member abroad falls into a category the law defines in its own terms: a personal transfer of means of payment, made from abroad to the Republic between a resident individual and a non-resident, covering gifts, aid, inheritance and annuities.
Money sent from Australia will not arrive on the fast rail. The National Bank operates five payment systems, and the instant one, launched on 22 October 2018, settles credit transfers of up to three hundred thousand dinars in seconds at any hour, with anything at or above that going to real-time gross settlement. Both take participants licensed in Serbia. The Bank runs a cross-border clearing as well, but that one settles euro payments with Bosnia and Herzegovina. So the money comes by correspondent bank, to a twenty-two character account number whose structure a Governor's decision fixed in December 2006 and applied from 3 March 2007.
Serbia's arrival in the European schemes is recent and changes nothing for this corridor. The European Payments Council brought the country into the geographical scope of the single euro payments area on 22 May 2025, and the credit transfer scheme became operational in May 2026 with the National Bank and eighteen of the country's nineteen banks having adhered to it. Those schemes carry euro between participants inside the area, and a payment sent from Australia matches them on neither count.

How much Serbian dinar will I receive in Serbia?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Serbia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Serbia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
