Paraguay is a landlocked heart-of-South-America country where nearly everyone speaks Guaraní alongside Spanish, and the mighty Paraná River does the heavy lifting for trade.

  • It's one of the few countries where an Indigenous language, Guaraní, is spoken by most of the population and is co-official with Spanish.
  • The Itaipú Dam, shared with Brazil, is one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in the world.
  • It's one of only two landlocked countries in South America.
  • The Gran Chaco, a vast, sparsely populated plain, covers much of its west.
  • It generates so much hydroelectric power that it exports a large share of it to neighbouring countries.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A horizontal triband of three equal bands, red, white and blue, unusual for carrying a different emblem on each face: on the obverse the national arms, a five-pointed yellow star inside a wreath of palm and olive with Republica del Paraguay lettered around it; on the reverse the Treasury seal, a seated lion with a pike behind it topped by the red Phrygian cap of liberty, and Paz y Justicia lettered above. The law of 25 November 1842 that still fixes the design describes both faces and gives the three colours no meaning.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The guaraní has been in continuous use since the 1940s and has never been redenominated, which is why the figures are so large: a modest Australian amount converts into a five- or six-figure guaraní sum. Prices are quoted in whole guaraníes, with nothing in practical use below the unit.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Paraguay determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/PYG converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The central address book, and who is allowed to use it

Paraguay keeps one national address book for payments. The general regulation of the country's payment systems defines an alias as a unique and non-repeatable identification within the centralised addressing system, registered by a customer through their own participating institution and linked to a bank account. It simplifies a transfer to a single item of information. Two things follow for a recipient: nobody else in the country can hold their alias, and the only route to creating one runs through the institution where the account already sits.

The instant payment system runs without stopping. The regulation requires it to function twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and obliges participants to offer the service on the same terms. Direct participants hold reserve accounts in the central bank's own real-time gross settlement system, and the Banco Central del Paraguay administers the whole arrangement, the gross settlement system, the automated clearing house and the instant system alike.

The identifier that reaches beyond the domestic system is a shorter story. Paraguay does not appear in the ISO 13616 registry, so no international account number exists for a Paraguayan account. The rules covering the domestic side are also recent, which is worth knowing if a payment arrangement was last set up some years ago. The regulation quoted here was approved in July 2023, replacing the one that had governed the system since 2012, and the statute beneath it was replaced in June 2025.

Common questions

How much Paraguayan guaraní will I receive in Paraguay?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Paraguay can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Paraguay. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
