Pakistan runs from the Arabian Sea coast up to some of the highest mountains on Earth, packing over 220 million people into the world's fifth-most-populous country. The Indus River has fed civilisations here for millennia.
It shares K2, the world's second-highest mountain, on its border with China.
The ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, with planned cities like Mohenjo-daro, flourished here over 4,000 years ago.
The Karakoram Highway, linking Pakistan and China, is one of the highest paved international roads on the planet.
Its national sport, field hockey, has brought the country multiple Olympic gold medals.
The markhor, a wild goat with corkscrew horns, is its national animal.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A dark green field with a white vertical bar at the mast, a white crescent on the green and a five-pointed white heraldic star. The design comes from a 1947 Constituent Assembly resolution which sets out its geometry and assigns no meanings, and no Pakistani constitution mentions the flag. The white was explained at adoption as the space for the country's religious minorities. The green is conventionally read for the Muslim majority, and the crescent for progress and the star for light and knowledge, but no instrument assigns those.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Pakistan actively channels family remittances through formal banking, and transfers arriving through official channels are treated differently from cash carried in. Rupee sums run large, so the margin built into a rate matters far more here than a flat sending fee.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Pakistan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
A Pakistani account number carries its bank's name in plain letters. The IBAN registry maintained by SWIFT as registration authority for ISO 13616 records the Pakistani format as 24 characters: the country code, two check digits, then four alphabetic characters, then sixteen alphanumeric ones. The registry's own worked example begins PK36 SCBL, and those four letters are the bank identifier.
A recipient reading that number back to whoever is paying them is reading out something legible: four letters sitting in the middle of the digits, where a numeric code would otherwise be. The State Bank of Pakistan registered the format, effective from December 2012.
1LINK, Pakistan's licensed payment system operator and switch, describes its interbank funds transfer service as a round-the-clock, real-time service processing transactions instantly across different banks. That is the leg between Pakistani banks, and it is separate from the correspondent arrangements that bring a payment in from overseas.
Where identity is checked, it is checked against the person and not the payment. The Sohni Dharti Remittance Program, run jointly by the Government of Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan, the Ministry of Finance and 1LINK, requires a registering remitter or beneficiary to hold either a Pakistani computerised national identity card or the national identity card issued for overseas Pakistanis. The programme layers loyalty points on top of ordinary remittance channels, which it leaves in place, and the points it awards are redeemable only at public-sector entities.
How much Pakistani rupee will I receive in Pakistan?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Pakistan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Pakistan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
