Peru drops from Pacific desert coast up over the Andes and down into Amazon rainforest, and holds Machu Picchu - the mountaintop city the Inca built and the outside world only rediscovered in 1911.

  • Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca citadel high in the Andes, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
  • The potato was first domesticated here, and Peru still grows thousands of native varieties.
  • The Nazca Lines are enormous ancient drawings etched into the desert, best seen from the air.
  • Part of the Amazon rainforest lies within its borders, packed with extraordinary wildlife.
  • Lake Titicaca, on its border with Bolivia, is the highest large navigable lake in the world.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three vertical bands of red, white and red. Article 49 of the constitution names the flag by its form and colours and says nothing about what they mean. The arms are carried on the state flag but not on the plain civil flag: a shield of three fields holding a vicuna, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia, which the law that created them reads as the country's animal, plant and mineral wealth.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Peru’s central bank has a long record of stepping into the market to smooth movements in the sol, which is why it has traded in a narrower range than most currencies in the region. Mining exports supply much of the country’s external earnings, so metal prices show up in the rate alongside domestic conditions.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Peru determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/PEN converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The two currencies Peru's payment systems settle in

Peru's central bank settles in two currencies rather than one. Under the regulation governing its real-time gross settlement system, article 2 treats each participant as holding two settlement accounts at the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, one in national currency and one in United States dollars. Article 3.5 then lists what the system settles, and among those operations are fund transfer orders in national and in foreign currency and, at paragraph (e), transfers abroad and from abroad. The retail layer carries both as well: immediate transfers between accounts run around the clock, with separate per-transaction ceilings in soles and in United States dollars.

The account identifier is the interbank account code. It is twenty digits, the same regulation defines it as the code assigned to a deposit account, and a customer obtains it from their own bank by telephone, electronic banking or in person. In a domestic transfer it is the beneficiary's code that the paying customer states.

An alias is a different identifier with a defined perimeter. Peru's interoperability regulation defines it as a validated identifier linking a funds-account number to a mobile number, the national identity document or the taxpayer registration number. The regulation binds only the entities enumerated in its Anexo 1: the domestic payment arrangements, the banks, the municipal savings and credit institutions, the finance companies and the electronic money issuers. Within that perimeter the rules give a sender a name check, requiring the beneficiary account holder's name to be displayed before a transfer is confirmed and returned after it. Separately, the banking supervisor's rules define a funds transfer as receiving money in cash from an originator to be delivered to the beneficiary that originator designates, and set out what a company doing that business may offer the public.

Common questions

How much Peruvian sol will I receive in Peru?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Peru can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Peru. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
