Panama is the slender S-shaped bridge between North and South America, and the country that cut a canal clean through it - reshaping global trade and, curiously, letting ships sail through mountains.

  • The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, saving ships a long voyage around South America.
  • It's one of the few places on Earth where you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific and set over the Atlantic.
  • Panama uses the US dollar as everyday cash, calling it the 'balboa' alongside its own coins.
  • The Darién Gap, a roadless stretch of dense jungle, is the only break in the Pan-American Highway.
  • Its rainforests host more bird species than the United States and Canada combined.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Divided into four quarters: a white one bearing a blue star at the upper hoist, a plain red quarter at the upper fly, a plain blue quarter at the lower hoist, and a white one bearing a red star at the lower fly. The constitution names the flag among the symbols of the Nation and adopts it by reference to Law 34 of 1949, saying nothing itself about what any of it means. That law does: since a 2012 amendment it gives the blue to the Conservative Party, the red to the Liberal Party and the white to the field of peace in which to make a homeland in the new Nation, the blue star to the purity and honesty that are to govern civic life, and the red star to the authority and the law that are to impose those virtues.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Panama has never printed a balboa note. The balboa exists as coins only, fixed one-for-one with the US dollar, and every banknote in the country is American, so a transfer here is a US dollar transfer wearing a different code. Both are legal tender and prices are quoted interchangeably.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Panama determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/PAB converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The record a remittance house hands over, and who clears the payment

Panamanian law treats the payout currency as something that has to be written down. Under Ley 48 of 2003, every remittance transaction is recorded in writing. Article 18 requires that record to carry the names of the remitter and the beneficiary, the class and number of the remitter's identity document, the control number, and the origin and destination of the remittance. It must also state the currency in which the remittance will be paid, with the exchange rate agreed at the moment of the transaction. Article 21 obliges the house to hand the client a copy when the operation is formalised. So the currency and the rate are terms of the transaction, on paper, in the client's hand.

The houses themselves sit outside the banking regime. The same law expressly excludes banks, post and telegraph from its scope, vests authorisation in the Ministerio de Comercio e Industrias, creates a register of casas de remesas de dinero, and requires the ministry to inspect each house at least once a year.

Clearing in Panama is arranged around an absence. On the World Bank's assessment for the Financial Sector Assessment Program, the country has never promulgated a payment systems law, so no regulator is charged with overseeing the payment system or licensing payment service providers, and the most important settlement system is operated by Banco Nacional de Panamá across five settlement sessions a day. The retail rails feeding it belong to a company owned by a consortium of commercial banks, which the same assessment records as neither a regulated entity nor subject to supervision by any authority. Cash is the ordinary form the money takes: the assessment records remittances as sent and received mostly in cash, and channelled principally through money transfer operators.

Common questions

How much Panamanian balboa will I receive in Panama?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Panama can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Panama. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
