A pair of long, green islands adrift in the South Pacific, New Zealand has more sheep than people and a habit of doing things first, from votes for women to summiting Everest.
In 1893 it became the first self-governing country in the world to grant women the right to vote.
It's home to the kiwi, a flightless nocturnal bird found nowhere else on Earth.
For much of its history it has had significantly more sheep than people.
New Zealander Edmund Hillary was, with Tenzing Norgay, among the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Everest in 1953.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and four red, white-edged stars of the Southern Cross on the fly. The Union Jack marks historic ties to Britain and the Southern Cross the nation's place in the South Pacific.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The trans-Tasman corridor is Australia’s closest: the two economies are tightly linked and the AUD/NZD rate moves in a narrower band than most pairs, though provider margins still vary widely. Work and family movement between the two countries keeps volumes heavy in both directions, so this corridor is quoted from both ends at once, and what varies between quotes is the margin taken on the conversion rather than anything about the route.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in New Zealand determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
New Zealand Police set the reporting line low. A prescribed transaction, in their definition, includes an international wire transfer of NZD 1,000 or more where at least one of the institutions involved, ordering, intermediary or beneficiary, is in New Zealand and at least one is outside it. The report is filed by the New Zealand institution holding one of those roles, which for money arriving from overseas is the recipient's own bank. The Department of Internal Affairs adds that such an institution has sight of who is sending money to its client, and owes risk-based handling where the required sender information fails to arrive with the transfer. The equivalent threshold for a domestic cash transaction sits ten times higher.
The domestic rails are slower than the phrase most New Zealanders know. Payments NZ extended electronic payment processing to weekends and public holidays from 26 May 2023, and is explicit about what that did: 365-day payments is about extending processing to every day of the year, which the organisation distinguishes from real-time payments, where money is sent and received instantly. The same guidance states that payments to and from other countries are not affected by the change.
A New Zealand account number carries a fourth field that catches senders out. Inland Revenue sets out the form as bank, branch, account and suffix, strung together, with leading zeros padding a short field. The suffix identifies which product at that branch the money is going to, so quoting the wrong one delivers the payment to a different account belonging to the same person. The bank and branch numbers themselves come from the register Payments NZ republishes monthly.
How much New Zealand dollar will I receive in New Zealand?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in New Zealand can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in New Zealand. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
