A long, fjord-shredded strip of northern Europe, Norway reaches so far above the Arctic Circle that the summer sun refuses to set, and its deep coastal inlets are the stuff of postcards.
Its heavily indented coastline is famous for fjords, deep sea inlets carved by ancient glaciers.
Parts of the country lie so far north that the sun never fully sets in summer, earning the nickname the land of the midnight sun.
It regularly tops global rankings for quality of life and human development.
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded each year in its capital, Oslo.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A red field with a blue Nordic cross outlined in white, its vertical arm shifted toward the hoist. Article 120 of the constitution provides only that the form and colours of the flag are determined by law, and the flag act of 1898 that it defers to gives the proportions as fractions and calls the colours only high red and dark blue, fixing no colour value and assigning no meaning. The off-centre cross is the Nordic form shared with Norway's neighbours, and the red, white and blue are conventionally read as colours of liberty.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The krone is closely tied to oil and gas revenue, which puts it in the same commodity-currency family as the Australian dollar. When energy and resource prices move together the cross can sit still while both legs are moving hard against everything else.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Norway determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
A state register that no amount is too small to enter
Money crossing the Norwegian border is registered, and the size of it does not decide the matter. The Currency Register Act of 28 May 2004, in force from the start of 2005, established a register of currency exchange and of payment means moved into and out of Norway, to prevent and combat crime and to contribute to correct payment of taxes and duties. Section 9 of the implementing regulation places the duty on the institution: where payment means move through a bank, the transfer is reported. A figure of one hundred thousand kroner appears in that section, but it governs only whether the purpose of the payment and its type are reported as well.
The Act names who may look. The police, the tax administration, the customs and excise administration, the Labour and Welfare Directorate and the Financial Supervisory Authority are given electronic access, and Norges Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and bankruptcy trustees have it too. Entries are deleted five years after the end of the year of registration at the latest.
The account the money lands in is described briefly. A Norwegian international account number runs to fifteen characters, over an eleven-digit domestic number ending in a check digit worked out on modulus eleven.
Holding a Norwegian account requires a Norwegian identity number. A foreign national who does not qualify for a birth number is issued a D-number instead, and that cannot be applied for directly: a bank or a public body has to start it.
The rails themselves belong to the industry. The interbank clearing system for the krone is used by every bank operating in Norway and is managed by Bits AS under authorisation from Norges Bank, with final settlement inside the central bank's own system. Bits also runs the register tying an account number to the name of the person who holds it. Cash has all but gone: the Bank's 2025 survey found the public using it for two per cent of their payments, which is why a right to pay with it had to be written into the Financial Contracts Act, in force from 1 October 2024.
How much Norwegian krone will I receive in Norway?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Norway can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Norway. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
