Africa's most populous country by a mile, Nigeria is home to more than 200 million people, hundreds of languages and Nollywood, a film industry that out-produces almost everyone.

  • It's the most populous country in Africa, home to more people than any other nation on the continent.
  • Its film industry, nicknamed Nollywood, is one of the most prolific in the world by number of films made.
  • More than 500 languages are spoken across the country.
  • The capital was moved from Lagos to the purpose-built city of Abuja in 1991.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three equal vertical bands of green, white and green. The Flags and Coats of Arms Act regulates only how the flag may be flown and never describes it, and the constitution mentions it once, in the citizen's duty to respect it; neither assigns the colours a meaning. Outside the law the state has published more than one reading of them, the fullest giving the green to agriculture and the white to unity and peace.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Nigeria receives more money from its diaspora than any other African country by a wide margin, and the flow from Australia is a small tributary of something very large. The naira traded through several official windows at different levels until those were merged in 2023.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Nigeria determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/NGN converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Cash below the line, an account above it

The Central Bank of Nigeria writes down how an inbound transfer must reach the person it is for. Its guidelines on international money transfer services state that all inbound money transfers to Nigeria shall be paid to beneficiaries in naira, through a bank account or in cash, and that proceeds of more than the equivalent of two hundred US dollars shall be paid through an account. Cash is a permitted channel rather than an informal one, but only below that line, and the guidelines require a cash payment to be made against a satisfactory or otherwise acceptable means of identification.

Not holding an account at the right bank does not stop the payment. The guidelines provide that where the beneficiary has no account with the operator's agent bank, that agent bank shall credit the beneficiary's account at another bank. The account it credits is addressed by a ten-digit number, the Central Bank's uniform bank account number: a nine-digit serial followed by a check digit produced by an algorithm operating on the assigned three-digit bank code and that serial. The check digit therefore encodes which bank the account belongs to, so a number typed against the wrong bank fails arithmetic before it travels anywhere, and every bank must treat it as the only account number used at any interface with a customer.

Since May 2026 the route the money takes has been prescribed as well. A circular of 24 March 2026 directs every licensed operator to open naira settlement accounts held with authorised dealer banks in Nigeria and to route all transactions strictly through them, and it is explicit that this covers disbursements to beneficiaries, which must be processed exclusively through those accounts.

Identity sits alongside the account number rather than inside it. The Central Bank describes the bank verification number as a number letting a customer have a single identity across the banking system, paired with the national identity number for higher account tiers and either one at the lowest. Nigeria does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry, so the account number and the bank's identifier code are what a sender abroad works from.

Common questions

How much Nigerian naira will I receive in Nigeria?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Nigeria can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Nigeria. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
