A slender country wrapped around one of Africa's Great Lakes - Lake Malawi is so full of colourful fish that biologists come here to study evolution in action.

  • Lake Malawi holds more species of fish than any other lake on Earth, most of them found nowhere else.
  • The lake stretches about 580 kilometres, covering roughly a third of the country.
  • It's nicknamed 'the Warm Heart of Africa' for the friendliness of its people.
  • Explorer David Livingstone reached the lake in 1859 and called it the 'Lake of Stars'.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of black, red and green, with a red rising sun on the black band. The meanings are prescribed rather than conventional: the First Schedule to the Protected Flag, Emblems and Names Act gives the black as the people of the Continent of Africa, the rising sun as the dawn of hope and freedom for the whole Continent of Africa, the red as the blood of the martyrs of African freedom, and the green as the ever green nature of Malawi. Section 2 of the constitution says only that Malawi shall have a National Flag; the design and the meanings are set out in that Act. Parliament replaced the design in 2010 with one carrying a full white sun and restored it in 2012.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Malawi and Zambia both call their money the kwacha, the word for dawn, and both inherited the name from the same federation, but they are separate currencies sitting at very different values. Confirm the ISO code before sending, because the names alone will not separate the two.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Malawi determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/MWK converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The rule that caps money leaving and expressly does not cap money arriving

Malawi's rulebook for money transfer agents treats the two directions differently, and it does so in consecutive paragraphs. The Reserve Bank of Malawi's Guidelines for Licensing and Operating Money Transfer Agents provide at paragraph 3.3 that inward remittances shall not be subject to any limit. Paragraph 3.4 then caps an outward remittance at one thousand United States dollars per transaction. The same instrument that restricts money leaving expressly declines to restrict money arriving.

What those guidelines expect at the far end is a counter. Before licensing an agent that is not already a foreign exchange dealer, the Reserve Bank inspects the premises, which must hold at a minimum a customer's lounge, a cashier counter and telecommunications equipment. Agents are confined to receiving and sending monetary instruments for immediate delivery, so they do not hold a recipient's money, and a permanent notice must tell customers they are entitled to a receipt for any transaction.

Not every arriving amount has to become kwacha. Non-resident foreign currency denominated accounts have been operational since 2006, may be opened by Malawians abroad at any bank, and can be credited with remittances through the normal banking channel. The Reserve Bank states there is no restriction period over which such a balance may be retained, so converting is the holder's decision rather than something the arrival triggers.

Common questions

How much Malawian kwacha will I receive in Malawi?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Malawi can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Malawi. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
