A scattering of nearly 1,200 coral islands spread across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is the flattest country on the planet - you can't find a hill anywhere in it.
It's the lowest-lying country in the world, with an average ground level of about 1.5 metres above sea level.
It's made up of around 1,190 coral islands grouped into a chain of atolls.
The word 'atoll' entered English from Dhivehi, the local language.
Its territory is more than 99% water.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A green rectangle bearing a white crescent, surrounded by a red border. Schedule 3 to the constitution builds it precisely - the border a quarter of the flag's width, the crescent drawn from two points at nine sixteenths and five eighths along the green field and opening away from the staff when hoisted - and pins every colour to two British Admiralty Colour Code numbers, one for nylon worsted bunting and one for other bunting. It assigns none of them a meaning. A 2017 regulation on the flag's use calls the whole flag the symbol of the country's independence and sovereignty, and gives its parts nothing. The red is conventionally read for the blood of national heroes, the green for peace and prosperity, and the crescent for Islam.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The Maldivian economy runs on tourism and a great deal of it is transacted in US dollars, so rufiyaa is not always what a recipient actually wants. Worth establishing which currency the receiving account is denominated in before fixing on this pair.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the Maldives determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The Maldives Monetary Authority puts a published deadline on the arrival of somebody else's money. Its Regulation on Payment Services, effective from 13 March 2022 under the National Payment System Act of 2021, requires a licensee to arrange for the beneficiary to receive the money within two business days, for a domestic remittance and an international inward one alike. The same clause allows five business days for an outward one, so the leg carrying money into the country has the tighter deadline.
That deadline governs the arrival. The last stretch is decided by the shape of the country. On the Authority's own figures, 94 per cent of the adult population holds at least one bank account, and eight commercial banks between them keep a presence in all twenty inhabited atolls, running 58 branches and 215 automated teller machines. Presence in twenty atolls is not presence on the islands themselves: the 2022 census counted 186 of those inhabited, forty of them with fewer than five hundred residents and only two with more than ten thousand.
The instant rail the Authority built is a domestic one and will not carry the transfer in. Favara was implemented in 2023 and inaugurated that August, is owned and operated by the Authority, and runs continuously for account-to-account credits inside the country. International account transfers, it says, are handled by the commercial banks through their own applications and over the counter. Of 132 million account transfers in 2024, ninety-nine in a hundred were domestic.
Identification has no floor on the way in. Under the money laundering regulation for transfer and changing businesses, a money changing transaction triggers due diligence at 50,000 rufiyaa and above; a money transfer triggers it on any transfer from another country into the Maldives, whatever the amount. Identity must be verified before the transaction is carried out, and where it cannot be, the licensee is required not to complete it.
How much Maldivian rufiyaa will I receive in the Maldives?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the Maldives can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the Maldives. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
