A volcanic island east of Madagascar, Mauritius was the only home of the dodo - a flightless bird that vanished within a century of humans arriving.

  • The dodo, now the world's most famous extinct bird, lived only on Mauritius.
  • It's one of the few countries in the region with no native land mammals other than bats.
  • Author Mark Twain quoted a saying that Mauritius was made first, and heaven was copied from it.
  • It has a stretch of coast where a play of light and sediment creates the illusion of an 'underwater waterfall'.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Four equal horizontal bands of red, blue, yellow and green, one of the few national flags of four stripes. The constitution has no flag provision at all. The bands are conventionally read as red for the struggle for independence, blue for the Indian Ocean around the island, yellow for the light of independence and green for the vegetation of an island that stays green all year.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Mauritius works as a financial-services centre for investment into Africa and Asia, so accounts held there are often multi-currency and the rupee may not be what a recipient wants credited. The rupee is freely convertible, which is less common in the region than the island’s banking profile suggests.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Mauritius determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/MUR converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

What the central bank says about using its switch from abroad

Mauritius has an instant payment rail, and the Bank of Mauritius is explicit that a person abroad cannot reach it. Its own leaflet on the Mauritius Central Automated Switch puts the question directly, asking whether the services can be used outside Mauritius, and answers that the switch does not provide services directly to individuals, that individuals benefit indirectly through the services of its participants, and that entering into bilateral agreements with operators of other countries is a future intention rather than a present capability.

That matters because of what the switch offers at home. Launched on 14 August 2019, owned and operated by the Bank and running around the clock, it lists among its services payment by alias, a pseudonym used in place of an account number. A recipient who is used to being paid that way domestically should not pass that alias to somebody sending from Australia, because the participant institution, not the switch, is where an inbound payment lands.

The large-value system behind it is domestic in the same way. The Bank describes the Mauritius Automated Clearing and Settlement System, which it owns and operates, as the country's only large value payment system, settling through commercial banks' accounts held at the Bank in real time on a gross basis, and usable to send funds from an account with a commercial bank to another account with a commercial bank in Mauritius. Mauritius does have a registered international account format, and that is what a sender uses instead.

Common questions

How much Mauritian rupee will I receive in Mauritius?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Mauritius can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Mauritius. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
