Macau’s economy is dominated by gaming to a degree no other place matches, and the tax on it funds most of the government, so the pataca sits on top of an unusually narrow revenue base. Casino floors quote and settle in Hong Kong dollars, which is a large part of why the local currency is less visible in Macau than a visitor expects.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The pataca is pegged to the Hong Kong dollar rather than directly to the US dollar, so it inherits that peg one step removed and moves with it. Hong Kong dollars circulate freely in Macau alongside patacas, which means a recipient may genuinely prefer HKD and it is worth asking before fixing on this pair.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Macau determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/MOP converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The currency an obligation is presumed to be in

Macau legislates which currency an obligation is expressed in, and the rule runs towards the local one. Article 1 of Decree-Law no. 16/95/M presumes that the remuneration of the factors of production, labour included, by anyone carrying on ordinary or regular activity in Macau is expressed in the local currency. The presumption gives way only where another currency has been unequivocally established as the form of payment. A preference does not displace it; an unequivocal agreement does.

The same article reaches how the price of anything is put to a person. Someone offering goods or services for sale in local commerce must state the price clearly in patacas, and may show another currency alongside it. What they may not do is display or advertise in a way that steers the public towards paying in something else. The decree-law was published on 3 April 1995, came into force that June, and replaced a 1988 predecessor on the same subject; the Monetary Authority instructs proceedings for breaches and the Chief Executive imposes the penalty.

None of this reaches what a person may hold. The decree-law binds how an obligation is expressed and how a price is displayed, not which notes circulate or which currency a recipient would rather be sent, and Hong Kong dollars are used in Macau either way. Who hands the money over is a separate question. The Authority publishes what it regulates in classes, and remittance companies and money changers are listed apart from banks, each licensed for something narrower. A payment can therefore reach somebody through a licensee that could never hold their account.

Common questions

How much Macanese pataca will I receive in Macau?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Macau can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Macau. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
