The most sparsely populated sovereign country on Earth, Mongolia is a land of open steppe where herders still live in felt tents and horses vastly outnumber people.
A red-blue-red vertical triband with the golden Soyombo emblem on the hoist-side red band. Article 12(5) of the constitution carries both the design and its reading: the middle third is the blue of the eternal sky, the two red bands either side are the symbol of progress and prosperity, and the Soyombo is placed in gold. Article 11 of the Law on State Symbols repeats that clause word for word, adding only a citation back to it. Neither text reads the Soyombo element by element, so the familiar breakdown into fire, sun, moon, earth, water and the yin-yang is not the law's. Independence, sovereignty and spirit are assigned elsewhere, to the state emblem, where the golden Soyombo and the precious steed express them together.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Mongolia’s economy leans heavily on mining exports, so the tögrög responds to commodity conditions in much the way the Australian dollar does. Both currencies moving on the same news can leave this cross looking oddly still.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Mongolia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Mongolia splits its domestic payments by size, and the number is published. The Bank of Mongolia's real-time gross settlement system carries transfers of more than three million togrog per transaction, and the Bank says in terms that the amount was set by a resolution of its Governor. Anything at three million or less goes to the automated clearing house instead, which runs continuously as well as in batches, clears on a net basis, and then settles in the gross system within the same working day or the next depending on which session the payment fell into. So the answer to when a credit appears depends on a threshold a central bank governor chose, and the recipient never sees the switch happen.
The instrument behind the split is published in full. The Bank gives it as Appendix I to Resolution No. 91 of its Governor, dated 12 February 2007, and the definition it opens with is the mechanism itself: a high-value payment is an interbank transaction above an amount the Governor sets.
Cards are cleared in a third place. Interbank card transactions run through the Bank of Mongolia's own electronic transaction centre for direct participants, are netted, and settle in the gross system on the following business day. A commercial bank handles clearing for indirect participants.
The legal frame is recent. The Law on National Payment System was approved on 31 May 2017 and took effect on 1 January 2018, giving the Bank of Mongolia the task of managing, regulating and overseeing the national payment system, and opening participation to entities that are not banks. The account format is newer still: Mongolia's twenty-character number, all of it digits after the country code and check pair, with the first four identifying the bank, took effect in April 2023.

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Mongolia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Mongolia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
