The peg dates from 1974, when the islands left the Jamaican dollar and fixed against the US dollar above parity - a level chosen then and not revisited since, which is why the rate looks like an arbitrary number rather than a round one. The Cayman Islands levy no income, capital gains or corporation tax, which is what built the financial sector the currency now serves.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The Cayman Islands dollar is fixed against the US dollar at a rate above parity, which makes it one of the few currencies worth more than a US dollar and means Australian dollar amounts convert into unusually small-looking figures. US dollars are also widely accepted across the islands.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the Cayman Islands determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

What must travel with the payment, and who checks it on arrival

The Cayman Islands puts a duty on the receiving end of a cross-border payment. Where a payment service provider in the Islands becomes aware that information about the payer is missing or incomplete on an incoming transfer, the regulations require it either to reject the transfer or to request the complete information. So where the receiving provider becomes aware the sender record is thin, the payment stops in Cayman.

What counts as complete is enumerated. The rules apply to transfers of funds in any currency sent or received by a payment service provider in or from within the Islands. Complete payer information means the payer's name, their account number or a unique identifier allowing the transaction to be traced back, and one of an address, a government-issued identity document number, a customer identification number, or a date and place of birth. The paying institution must also collect information about the payee, being the name and either an account number or a unique transaction reference, and the institution receiving the payment must verify the payee information and keep records of it for five years. The account number in that field is a domestic one, the Cayman Islands having no ISO 13616 registry entry.

There is no small-payment exemption for a wire. The regulations require customer due diligence for a one-off transaction above a stated value, and then require it separately for a one-off transaction that is a wire transfer, with no amount attached to that limb at all. The customer must be identified and verified using reliable, independent source documents, data or information, the verification must happen before or during the transaction for a one-off customer, and where the due diligence cannot be completed the institution must not perform the transaction.

The regulator behind all of that is the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, which licenses banking business in two categories, the first of them the domestic and retail class. It also licenses money services business, covering money transmission, cheque cashing, currency exchange and the issue of money orders and travellers cheques, and states that of its five licensed money services businesses only three are actively conducting business. Collecting outside a bank therefore means dealing with one of a very small number of firms.

Common questions

How much Cayman Islands dollar will I receive in the Cayman Islands?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the Cayman Islands can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the Cayman Islands. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
