A small, oil-rich country at the head of the Persian Gulf, Kuwait turns desert heat up to extremes and its skyline into a showcase. Its landmark Towers have watched over the bay since 1979.

  • It sits atop some of the world's largest proven oil reserves despite its compact size.
  • It regularly records some of the hottest temperatures ever measured on the planet.
  • The iconic Kuwait Towers, with their blue-green spheres, opened in 1979 and store water inside.
  • It has no natural rivers or lakes and relies heavily on desalinated seawater.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A horizontal tricolour of green, white and red with a black trapezoid at the hoist, the Pan-Arab colours. Article 5 of the constitution provides only that the law shall specify the flag, assigning it no meaning. The state's own account traces the four colours to a line of classical Arabic verse, which gives white for deeds, black for battles, green for pastures and red for blades.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The Kuwaiti dinar carries the highest unit value of any circulating currency, so one dinar buys several Australian dollars and transfer amounts look unusually small written down. It also divides into 1000 fils, not 100, which catches people out on rounding.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Kuwait determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/KWD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Two regulators watch Kuwait's money changers

Two shopfronts in Kuwait can look identical from the pavement and answer to different authorities. The country's 2024 mutual evaluation, published by its own financial intelligence unit, counts 32 exchange companies supervised by the Central Bank of Kuwait and 250 currency exchange organisations supervised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The split runs deeper than a headcount: for the institutions the central bank oversees, the evaluation records that the Bank grants initial approval while the ministry issues the formal licence. The same report describes the exchange company sector as the only money or value transfer service in the country other than the banks, and notes that cash remains the dominant payment mechanism. The central bank publishes its half of the split as a register; no equivalent list from the ministry could be found.

The bank route is addressed by a number the central bank asks recipients to hand over themselves. Its guidance on the international account number puts the steps in the recipient's own hands, instructing them to obtain the number from their own bank - from a statement, through online banking, at a cash machine or by asking - and to pass it to whoever wishes to send them funds. The Bank's list of covered payments names incoming payments from banks outside Kuwait to beneficiaries at banks operating in Kuwait as one of three categories, alongside domestic payments and outgoing ones.

Identification is set out by document, and the document depends on where a person lives. Central bank instructions require a copy of the civil identity card for citizens and residents, and a passport or travel document for a person not resident in Kuwait, before an electronic funds transfer is carried out at all. Where the identity of the customer or the beneficial owner cannot be verified, the bank is prohibited from carrying out the transaction.

Common questions

How much Kuwaiti dinar will I receive in Kuwait?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Kuwait can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Kuwait. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
