A mountain republic where the Tian Shan range fills the horizon and horses still matter more than highways. Kyrgyzstan keeps nomadic traditions alive around the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul.
More than 90% of the country is mountainous, dominated by the towering Tian Shan range.
Lake Issyk-Kul is one of the largest and deepest alpine lakes on Earth and never freezes.
The Kyrgyz epic 'Manas' is one of the longest pieces of oral poetry ever recorded.
Yurts and horseback culture remain central to rural life across its highland pastures.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A red field with a golden sun at the centre, its forty rays straight since a December 2023 amendment, and its disc crossed by the red lines of a tunduk, the crown of a Kyrgyz yurt. The constitution provides only that the state symbols exist and that a law establishes their description and official use. That law counts the rays and fixes their shape and assigns none of it a meaning. The meanings come from a government technical specification, which reads the forty rays as the forty tribes reunited into a people, the tunduk as a sign of home, and the tunduk joined to the sun as the unity of all the peoples of the mountain country.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Remittances make up an exceptionally large share of Kyrgyzstan’s national income, among the highest proportions anywhere. The dominant corridor is with Russia rather than Australia, which shapes which providers bother to serve it.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Kyrgyzstan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The rule most people expect here runs the other way. Under the National Bank's rules on money transfers through transfer systems, approved in July 2009, a transfer arriving through an international system is provided to the recipient in the currency of the sending country, being other than the som. The mirror provision keeps it coherent: a som transfer inside the country may only run through a local system.
Getting to som is a second, separately regulated act. The rules allow conversion out of the transfer currency and then narrow how: a Kyrgyz bank may do it only at the rate shown on the board of buying and selling rates for foreign currency, the one used for exchanging cash. The recipient exchanges money over a counter; the transfer itself never changes currency.
What a sender is asked for is a sixteen-digit number with no international registration behind it. A National Bank instruction of February 2005 groups the digits into three blocks: the first three are the opening positions of the bank's own identifier code, eleven carry the account inside that bank, and the last is a control digit.
The operator carrying the money has to be on a list first. Registration with the National Bank precedes the service and unregistered activity is prohibited, and the register is public, split between international and local systems. It is where a recipient checks that whoever holds their money is licensed to.
How the money is taken is then the recipient's choice. It may be collected as cash at a till or a bank's machine, or directed to a bank account, a payment card, or an identified electronic wallet issued by a Kyrgyz bank. Where the system uses an identifier carrier, that carrier is a one-time card, not a bank payment card, barred from any other banking operation and living no more than thirty days from the day the transfer was sent.
How much Kyrgyzstani som will I receive in Kyrgyzstan?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Kyrgyzstan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Kyrgyzstan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
