Jersey still issues a one-pound note, withdrawn in England in 1988, and its notes carry island scenes rather than the monarch’s portrait alone. The States of Jersey keep the profit on issuing them, which is a meaningful revenue line for a jurisdiction of about a hundred thousand people.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Jersey issues notes at par with sterling under its own authority, and ISO has never assigned the currency a code, so JEP is a market convention rather than an official one. Bank accounts on the island are usually denominated in sterling, which is what most transfers from Australia actually settle in.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Jersey determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The duty that sits with the bank at this end

Jersey took the European rules on information accompanying transfers of funds and gave them force locally. The EU Legislation (Information Accompanying Transfers of Funds) (Jersey) Regulations 2017, made under the European Union Legislation (Implementation) (Jersey) Law 2014, provide that Regulation (EU) 2015/847 has effect in Jersey as though it were an enactment, subject to a schedule of exceptions and modifications.

What must travel with the payment is set by article 4 of that Regulation. On the payer: their name, their payment account number, and one of their address, official personal document number, customer identification number, or date and place of birth. On the payee: their name and their payment account number. A unique transaction identifier stands in for the account numbers where a transfer runs neither from nor to one. The payer's provider must verify its information against a reliable and independent source before executing anything.

The schedule is where the island's own position is set. References to a Member State and to the Union are read as if Jersey were itself a Member State, its territory were inside the Union's, and, for European Union law purposes, it were a separate country from the United Kingdom. Where the schedule substitutes "the British Islands" it defines the term as the United Kingdom, Jersey, the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Liability then attaches at both ends of the chain. The Regulations define the payee as the person who is the intended final recipient of the funds. It is an offence, carrying up to two years' imprisonment and a fine, for the payee's own payment service provider to contravene the articles governing what it must do when a transfer arrives short of that information. Separate offences with the same penalty cover the payer's provider and any intermediary in between.

Common questions

How much Jersey pound will I receive in Jersey?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Jersey can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Jersey. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
