Every note in circulation is backed by US dollars lodged with the Exchange Fund before it may be issued, which is what makes the arrangement a currency board rather than a policy target - the defence is mechanical, not a decision anyone takes each morning. It also means the Monetary Authority has no independent interest rate to set: Hong Kong imports whatever the United States does.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Hong Kong holds its dollar inside a narrow band against the US dollar under a currency board, so almost all the movement in this pair belongs to the Australian side rather than the Hong Kong one. Three commercial banks issue the notes rather than a central bank, which is unusual and makes no practical difference to a transfer.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Hong Kong determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/HKD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

One rail, two currencies

Hong Kong Interbank Clearing has operated the Faster Payment System since 2018, and operates it in two currencies, Hong Kong dollars and renminbi, letting a payment be addressed to a mobile number or an email address in place of an account number. Beneath it, the Hong Kong dollar real-time gross settlement system has cleared through the same operator since December 1996.

On 22 June 2025 that rail acquired a cross-boundary door. Payment Connect, announced by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and the People's Bank of China, links the Faster Payment System to the mainland's Internet Banking Payment System. The operator's guidance is that a Hong Kong payee supplies either a bank account number or a linked proxy able to receive the chosen currency, and says which of the two currencies they want. The door opens to one jurisdiction, and a payment originating anywhere else still arrives as a correspondent-bank credit.

What a bank does with such a payment has been set out by the Hong Kong Association of Banks since a circular it issued in March 2008. On receiving a foreign-currency remittance for credit of a customer, a member bank first establishes whether the payment message carries any special payment instructions; where it does not, the remittance goes on to the beneficiary bank in the same foreign currency, irrespective of the amount involved. A recipient expecting Hong Kong dollars, in other words, is expecting a conversion that the sender has to have asked for.

Common questions

How much Hong Kong dollar will I receive in Hong Kong?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Hong Kong can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Hong Kong. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
