The heart of the ancient Maya world, Guatemala stacks volcanoes, cloud forest and colonial towns into Central America's most populous country, with the temples of Tikal rising straight out of the jungle canopy.
The ancient Maya city of Tikal has towering stone temples that rise above the rainforest canopy.
It has more than 30 volcanoes, several of which are still active.
Lake Atitlan, ringed by volcanoes, is often called one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.
The quetzal, its national bird, is so prized that the currency is named after it.
More than 20 distinct Mayan languages are still spoken across the country today.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Two blue vertical bands flanking a white one, with the national coat of arms at the centre, carrying a quetzal, a scroll, two Remington rifles crossed at right angles, two swords and laurel branches. Article 3 of Decree 104-97 assigns the colours their meanings, and they are not geographic: white represents purity, peace, integrity, firmness and light, and blue expresses strength, justice, truth and loyalty. The same article reads the arms, giving the sword as justice and sovereignty, the laurel branches as victory, the scroll as the immortality of the date of the nation's birth, and the quetzal as the supreme symbol of liberty. The reading of the two blue bands as the Pacific and the Caribbean is not the law's.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
What Guatemalans abroad send home is worth a substantial fraction of the whole economy, and that steady inflow is one reason the quetzal has kept its footing against the US dollar better than most currencies in Central America. Australia is a minor origin on a route dominated by the United States.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Guatemala determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The rule that was struck down, and where people actually collect
Guatemala once legislated to make remittances pay out in local currency, and the courts took it back out. An article added to the free foreign-exchange negotiation law would have provided that institutions acting as intermediaries in receiving foreign currency sent as family remittances could settle them only in their equivalent in national currency. The Constitutional Court declared it unconstitutional in a judgment of 15 December 2003, and the central bank's own compiled text of the law prints the article struck through with the judgment and its case numbers in a footnote beneath it. What was left standing is the law's opening article, which makes the holding and management of deposits and accounts in foreign currency free, along with the remittance, transfer, purchase, sale and payment of and with foreign currency.
So the currency a Guatemalan recipient ends up with is not settled by statute. Where they collect it, on the other hand, is measured. The national statistics institute's household financial inclusion survey for 2025 asked the 22.5 per cent of households that receive remittances how they take them. The answers overlap, because a household may use several. Cash withdrawn at a bank branch came out at 71.7 per cent, and cash withdrawn at a banking agent, neighbourhood shop or similar at 53.7 per cent. A direct deposit into a bank account accounted for 44.9 per cent, a remittance company for 9.8 per cent and an electronic wallet for 3.6 per cent. The survey is probabilistic and two-stage, covering all twenty-two departments through face-to-face interviews across ten thousand five hundred dwellings. For the 44.9 per cent taking a deposit, that account carries an international identifier: Guatemala has been in the ISO 13616 registry since September 2016, with a twenty-eight character account number.
How much Guatemalan quetzal will I receive in Guatemala?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Guatemala can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Guatemala. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
