The first sub-Saharan African colony to win independence, Ghana runs on gold, cocoa and football fever, with a coastline of old trading forts and a warm reputation that gave it the nickname 'the friendly country'.

  • In 1957 it became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule.
  • It's one of the world's largest producers of cocoa, the raw ingredient of chocolate.
  • Lake Volta, created by the Akosombo Dam, is one of the largest artificial lakes on Earth by surface area.
  • Ghana takes its name from a powerful medieval West African empire.
  • Its coast is dotted with centuries-old European forts and castles, now UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of red, gold and green with a black five-pointed star centred on the gold band. No Ghanaian law assigns the colours a meaning: the 1992 Constitution does not mention the flag, and the Flag and Arms Protection Act, 1959 defines 'Flag' only as the national Flag of the Republic. The meanings come from the designer, Theodosia Salome Okoh, whose own account published by the Government of Ghana gives red to those who died or worked for independence, gold to the country's mineral wealth, green to Ghana's tropical vegetation, and the black star to African emancipation and unity.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Ghana struck four zeros off its currency in 2007, and the redenominated cedi is what circulates now. Much of the final leg here arrives in a phone wallet rather than a bank account, because Ghana’s mobile-money networks interconnect, so a recipient’s registered number often matters more than a branch.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Ghana determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/GHS converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Why the payout currency is settled upstream

Ghana settles the currency question before the recipient is involved. Bank of Ghana Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2025/25, the updated guidelines for inward remittance services by payment service providers issued on 25 August 2025, requires the settlement bank to credit the provider's local settlement account with the Ghana cedi equivalent of inward remittances payable to beneficiaries within twenty-four hours, and requires that all disbursements be made from that account. The last leg is a domestic cedi payment out of a Ghanaian bank account rather than a wire landing in anyone's hands.

Where it can be paid is bounded by the same notice, and so is what the provider may do with the money in the meantime. Remittances are terminated into beneficiaries' bank accounts, mobile money wallets or another electronic account or wallet approved by the Bank of Ghana. The settlement funds may be used solely for payment to beneficiaries, with the settlement bank not honouring any request other than for payment to them, and funds that have been terminated must be reconciled and matched within seventy-two hours.

Identity is a single document. The Bank's supervisory guidance note on the use of the Ghana Card requires accountable institutions to use only that card to identify and verify all customers, including Ghanaian citizens living in Ghana and abroad, permanent residents and resident nationals of the regional bloc, and provides that where a customer has not registered for one the institution shall not undertake any financial transaction for them. A foreign non-resident in Ghana for under ninety days is the exception, verified on a valid international passport, and a remittance is the first of the one-off transactions they may be given.

Common questions

How much Ghanaian cedi will I receive in Ghana?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Ghana can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Ghana. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
